Job Summary
Open Minds Early School is looking for a warm, collaborative, and enthusiastic Preschool Associate Teacher to join our Spanish immersion, Reggio Emilia-inspired program in Montclair.
The Associate Teacher works closely with the Lead Teacher to implement engaging, play-based curriculum and support children’s learning and development. Responsibilities include leading small-group activities, preparing learning materials and centers, supporting children’s social-emotional development and conflict resolution, observing and documenting children’s progress, and helping maintain a safe, nurturing classroom environment.
The ideal candidate is passionate about early childhood education, enjoys working as part of a team, and values children’s curiosity, interests, and individual development. Full Spanish fluency is required.
Responsibilities
- Represents and promotes the mission, vision, and philosophy of Open Minds Early School.
- Assists the Lead Teacher in implementing planned daily curriculum activities, including small-group and one-on-one instruction.
- Leads small-group activities — literacy and math centers, art, science exploration — as planned by the Lead Teacher.
- Shares ideas of projects and activities that are aligned with the Reggio Emilia philosophy and based on the student’s interests and developmental levels.
- Prepares classroom materials, learning centers, and activity stations in line with the Lead Teacher’s lesson plans.
- Supports peer social interactions, reinforces the conflict-resolution strategies and supports students in the development of social emotional skills based on the Conscious Discipline model.
- Supports children’s transitions between activities, circle time, outdoor play, and daily routines.
- Observes and documents children’s participation, behavior, and developmental progress; shares observations with the Lead Teacher.
- Maintains established classroom routines and provides continuity of care during brief absences of the Lead Teacher.
- Assists with family communication under the direction of the Lead Teacher (e.g., daily reports, incident reports, informal check-ins, sharing pictures with families on Brightwheel).
- Assists in maintaining a clean, safe, organized classroom and outdoor play environment.
- Assumes responsibility for the health, safety, and well-being of all children in the classroom.
- Attends staff meetings, trainings, and community events as requested, without exception.
- Attends all special events and celebrations outside of the school hours- these events will be paid hours.
- Participates in activities that further own professional growth.
- Maintains confidentiality of all children, families, and employees.
- Greets all children, parents, staff, and guests in a warm, professional manner.
- Assists other staff members when requested or as needed.
- All other duties as assigned by the Lead Teacher, Assistant Director, or Director.

Position Qualifications/Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum 12 core Early Childhood Development/Child Development semester units required. California Child
- Development Associate Teacher degree preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years prior experience working with young children preferred.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred – Full Spanish fluency required.
Company-wide Job Requirements
- Must pass a health screening and TB test.
- Must pass background fingerprint clearance (Department of Justice).
- Valid Driver’s License or state-issued Identification Card required.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Required to use computers as needed to complete work tasks and may be asked to answer phones.
- Immunization records that comply with Senate Bill 792 (immunity for measles, pertussis, rubella, and influenza).
- Required to be a mandated reporter and complete the state-approved Child Abuse Mandated Reporter Certification upon hire, renewed every 2 years.
- Valid Pediatric/Adult CPR and First Aid certification required.
Physical Demands
- This role will require long periods of standing and walking.
- The ability to lift, push, carry, and/or move up to 30 lbs.
- Job duties are performed in a school environment; the physical demands listed are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential duties of this job.
Pay: $22.00 – $30.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40.0 per week
