The Sewer Excavation Superintendent is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising all field activities associated with sewer excavation, underground utility installation, and related civil construction projects. This position ensures projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with project specifications, regulatory requirements, and company standards. The Superintendent oversees crews, subcontractors, equipment utilization, and daily construction operations while maintaining strong communication with project management, clients, inspectors, and municipal representatives.

Key Responsibilities:
Project Supervision
- Direct and supervise daily sewer excavation and underground utility construction activities.
- Coordinate workforce, equipment, materials, and subcontractors to achieve project objectives.
- Review project plans, specifications, schedules, and contract requirements.
- Monitor production rates and implement corrective actions as necessary.
- Ensure projects remain on schedule and within budget.
Safety Management
- Enforce company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
- Conduct daily safety meetings, job hazard analyses, and site inspections.
- Ensure proper trench safety systems, shoring, shielding, and excavation practices are utilized.
- Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Promote a culture of safety and accountability among all field personnel.
Field Operations
- Oversee sewer main installation, storm sewer installation, manhole construction, service connections, and related excavation activities.
- Coordinate utility locating and protection activities.
- Verify line and grade compliance with project plans.
- Manage dewatering operations and site drainage as required.
- Ensure quality workmanship and adherence to construction specifications.
Personnel Management
- Supervise foremen, equipment operators, laborers, and subcontractors.
- Assign daily tasks and establish production goals.
- Mentor, train, and develop field personnel.
- Evaluate employee performance and address disciplinary issues when necessary.
- Participate in workforce planning and staffing decisions.
Quality Control
- Ensure all work meets project specifications, municipal standards, and quality requirements.
- Coordinate inspections with owners, engineers, and regulatory agencies.
- Identify and resolve construction issues promptly.
- Maintain accurate project documentation and field reports.
Communication & Coordination
- Serve as the primary field contact for project managers, engineers, inspectors, and clients.
- Attend project meetings and provide updates on progress, scheduling, and challenges.
- Coordinate with utility companies and local agencies.
- Communicate schedule changes, delays, and resource needs to management.
Equipment & Resource Management
- Monitor equipment productivity and maintenance needs.
- Coordinate material deliveries and inventory management.
- Optimize crew and equipment utilization to maximize efficiency.
- Ensure proper care and operation of company assets.
- Coordinate workforce, equipment, materials, and subcontractors to achieve project objectives.
- Review project plans, specifications, schedules, and contract requirements.

Requirements:
Education
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate degree or technical training in Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 7-10 years of underground utility, sewer excavation, or heavy civil construction experience.
- Minimum of 3-5 years in a supervisory or superintendent role.
- Demonstrated experience with municipal sewer, storm drain, water main, and excavation projects.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of underground utility construction methods and equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of OSHA excavation and trench safety requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and utility drawings.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple crews and priorities simultaneously.
- Proficiency with construction management software, tablets, and electronic reporting systems.
Certifications
- Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
- CDL-A preferred but not required.
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification preferred.
- Competent Person for Excavation and Trenching preferred.
- First Aid/CPR Certification preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to walk uneven terrain and active construction sites.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to stand, bend, climb, and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and emergency schedules as required.
Working Conditions

- Frequent travel between project locations may be required.
