PURPOSE

OF JOB

The incumbent is responsible for technical support and facility maintenance within the Mechanical Engineering Research Testing Laboratories and associated facilities, as well as technical project support. The candidate needs to facilitate and administer the learning process for students in modules presented at Nelson Mandela University at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in all laboratories of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The candidate should also be involved in community engagement activities and support the university’s values while implementing the KPAs required for the position.

PERFORMANCE AREAS CORE COMPETENCIES

Ability to manage all laboratory operations.

Proficiency in installing, calibrating, operating, and maintaining various laboratory equipment.

Ability to provide a safe and healthy work environment, conduct risk assessments, and educate others on safety regulations.

Ability to convey technical information clearly and understandably, both verbally and in writing.

Project management skills to plan, organize, and execute technical projects efficiently, ensuring completion on time and within budget.

Effective teamwork and collaboration with industry, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds to identify technical requirements and support multidisciplinary projects.

Ability to develop learning manuals for undergraduate and postgraduate students, utilizing equipment for research or experimental work.

Good interpersonal skills to work effectively with department members and as part of a team.

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of a BTech Degree, Advanced Diploma, or BEngTech in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Industrial Engineering.

3-5 years of relevant technical experience.

Proven track record in guiding and training students in experimental work.

Competence in operating or maintaining a Drone, 6-axis robotic laser cell, EDS, or iXRD, demonstrated through a competency test post-interview.

Professional registration: a minimum of Technician or Technologist registration is beneficial. The successful candidate is expected to apply for and register as a Technologist within 12 months if not already registered.
