Job Title: Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Technician
Job Summary:
An Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Technician in South Africa is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of air conditioning, refrigeration, and climate control systems in residential, commercial, and industrial applications. The role requires compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), SANS regulations, and environmental guidelines for refrigerant handling.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Installation & Commissioning:
Install air conditioning, refrigeration, and ventilation systems as per manufacturer guidelines and SANS standards.
2. Routine Maintenance & Servicing:
Perform scheduled maintenance on HVAC and refrigeration systems in accordance with SANS 10147 and OEM specifications.
Inspect and clean condensers, evaporators, filters, and drain lines.
Check system performance, pressure levels, and airflow to optimise efficiency.
Identify leaks, worn-out components, and potential system failures before breakdowns occur.
3. Troubleshooting & Repairs:
Diagnose faults and repair refrigeration compressors, condensers, expansion valves, evaporators, and thermostats.
Replace faulty components such as fans, motors, belts, and electrical wiring.
Use diagnostic tools (manifold gauges, multimeters, leak detectors) to identify system malfunctions.
Recharge refrigerants while complying with environmental and safety regulations.
4. Electrical & Control Systems:
Inspect and repair electrical circuits, control panels, and wiring related to HVAC and refrigeration systems.
Install, program, and calibrate thermostats, pressure sensors, and humidity controllers.
Ensure that all electrical and automation systems comply with South African electrical codes.
5. Compliance & Safety:
Adhere to South African health and safety regulations, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
Follow environmental protection guidelines for refrigerant recovery and disposal (compliance with DEA & F-Gas regulations).
Ensure safe handling of hazardous materials such as refrigerants and lubricants.
Maintain records of refrigerant usage, system maintenance logs, and safety checklists.
6. Customer Service & Reporting:
Communicate with clients regarding system issues and recommended solutions.
Provide quotations and explain repair or maintenance options.
Maintain accurate service records, maintenance schedules, and reports for audit purposes.
Educate customers on energy-efficient solutions and system upgrades.
Minimum Qualifications & Certifications (South Africa):Education & Training:
N3/N4 National Certificate in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning or equivalent.
Trade Test Certificate (Red Seal) in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, compulsory
Registered with SAQCC Gas (Category A, B, or C) for safe handling of refrigerants, compulsory
Electrical Trade Test (Advantageous) for working with electrical systems.
Experience:
Minimum 2-5 years of experience in HVAC & refrigeration installation, maintenance, and repairs.
Experience with residential, commercial, and industrial systems, including chillers, split units, VRV/VRF, and cold storage.
Technical Skills:
Strong understanding of refrigeration cycles, heat transfer, and thermodynamics.
Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical and electrical HVAC faults.
Familiarity with South African building codes and energy efficiency regulations.
Ability to work with various refrigerants and understand environmental impacts.
Competence in using diagnostic tools such as pressure gauges, digital thermometers, and ammeters.
Soft Skills:
Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
Excellent communication and customer service abilities.
Ability to work independently and in a team.
High attention to detail and accuracy in troubleshooting.
Set up and test new systems to ensure they function correctly and efficiently.
Connect piping, electrical wiring, and control systems for HVAC units.
Charge refrigeration systems with the appropriate refrigerant type (R-410A, R-134a, R-22, CO2, ammonia-based, etc.) in compliance with South African environmental laws.
