Job Title: Health and Safety Officer – Canteen
Location: Constantia Kloof
Reports To: Canteen Manager / Facilities Manager
Employment Type: Full-Time / Part-Time / Contract
Job Summary:
The Health and Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring the canteen operates in compliance with all relevant health, safety, and hygiene standards. This role involves identifying potential hazards, conducting regular inspections, and promoting a culture of safety among kitchen staff and service personnel.
Key Responsibilities:
Health & Safety Compliance:
Ensure the canteen complies with local health, safety, hygiene, and food safety regulations.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of laws and regulations relating to workplace safety and food handling.
Inspections & Audits:
Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of the kitchen, dining area, storage, and waste disposal areas.
Monitor cleanliness, pest control, ventilation, and equipment maintenance.
Risk Management:
Identify potential hazards and implement measures to prevent accidents and injuries.
Maintain records of incidents and near-misses and conduct root cause analyses.
Training & Awareness:
Train staff on proper hygiene, sanitation, PPE usage, fire safety, and emergency procedures.
Promote health and safety awareness through posters, checklists, and regular briefings.
Documentation & Reporting:
Maintain safety logs, inspection records, and safety data sheets.
Prepare reports for management and regulatory authorities as required.
Emergency Preparedness:
Ensure fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency exits are accessible and functional.
Coordinate emergency drills and response plans.
Qualifications & Skills:
Diploma or certification in Occupational Health and Safety, Food Safety, or related field.
Knowledge of food safety standards (e.g., HACCP) is essential.
2+ years experience in a similar role, preferably in a food service or hospitality environment.
Strong attention to detail and observation skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and with cross-functional teams
