Position Summary

The Foreman is a working member of the field crew who leads and directs daily jobsite operations for seeding, sod installation, grading, straw application, and erosion control on construction, commercial, and roadway projects.

The Foreman is responsible for preparing jobsites, organizing the crew, assigning daily tasks, operating equipment, and working alongside crew members to ensure each project is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with Penlin Seeding and customer standards.

The Foreman serves as the on-site leader of the crew and is expected to set the example for quality workmanship, productivity, safety, attendance, and professionalism.

In addition to leadership responsibilities, the Foreman performs all Laborer duties, including physical outdoor work associated with commercial seeding, erosion control, grading, sod installation, and related site work.

Essential Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead and collaborate with field crews performing seeding, sod installation, grading, straw application, and erosion control.
  • Prepare and oversee jobsites for seed, sod, and erosion control installation.
  • Review the day’s work and organize the crew to complete assigned projects efficiently.
  • Assign tasks to crew members and provide clear instructions and guidance.
  • Ensure proper jobsite preparation, including grading, soil preparation, cleanup, and debris removal.
  • Perform and supervise the spreading and application of grass seed, fertilizer, straw, and other materials.
  • Perform and supervise sod installation, including carrying, positioning, cutting, and laying sod.
  • Install and supervise erosion control measures, including erosion control blankets, matting, silt fence, straw wattles, dandy bags, inlet protection, and other materials as required.
  • Supervise and perform loading, unloading, carrying, and distribution of seed, straw, sod, tools, equipment, and other jobsite materials.
  • Safely operate hand tools and small equipment necessary to complete assigned work.
  • Perform hand grading, raking, and soil preparation before seeding or sod installation.
  • Safely operate hydroseeding equipment, grading equipment, straw blowing equipment, skid loaders, tractors, trucks, and similar equipment.
  • Conduct quality control and verify that work is completed according to job specifications and Penlin Seeding standards.
  • Monitor crew productivity and help keep projects on schedule.
  • Identify jobsite issues and communicate concerns to management.
  • Ensure employees follow company safety procedures and properly wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe jobsite.
  • Perform daily inspections of assigned vehicles, trailers, tools, and equipment.
  • Report equipment damage, maintenance needs, material shortages, accidents, and jobsite concerns promptly to the Manager and/or Safety Coordinator.
  • Assist with loading, securing, transporting, and unloading equipment and materials.
  • Assist crew members as needed.
  • Perform basic maintenance, cleaning, and fueling of trucks and equipment.
  • Clean tools, vehicles, trailers, and equipment after use.
  • Follow instructions provided by the Manager or other designated company representative.
  • Maintain professional conduct when interacting with customers, contractors, inspectors, other trades, and the public.
  • Train and support less-experienced crew members in proper work methods, equipment use, safety practices, and Penlin Seeding expectations.
  • Complete the Daily Work Log in the Buildertrend system.
  • Ensure all crew members properly clock in and out at the shop and job sites using the appropriate municipality/job designation.
  • Perform other related duties as needed based on project and company needs.

Physical Requirements

This position requires regular physical labor in an outdoor construction and landscaping environment. The Foreman must be able to:

  • Lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Stand, kneel, bend, climb, push, pull, and walk repetitively for extended periods.
  • Repeatedly lift and carry tools, materials, sod, seed, straw, and other supplies.
  • Work on uneven, muddy, sloped, or rough terrain.
  • Safely enter and exit trucks, trailers, and equipment as required.
  • Work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, wind, dust, mud, noise, traffic, and changing jobsite conditions.
  • Safely perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of seeding, grading, sod installation, and erosion control practices.
  • Previous experience leading or directing employees preferred.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal instructions and provide clear direction to crew members.
  • Ability to motivate, guide, and support crew members.
  • Action-oriented and energetic with the ability to recognize and accept opportunities.
  • Ability to make practical decisions and solve problems in the field.
  • Basic knowledge of construction machinery and the ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues in the field.
  • Takes initiative and can complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Good communication skills when interacting with crew members, management, customers, and contractors.
  • Fluent English required. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a crew.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Willingness and ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work.
  • Ability to safely use basic hand tools and equipment with appropriate instruction or training.
  • Ability to read and understand job instructions, plans, specifications, and work orders.
  • Ability to follow company and jobsite safety procedures.
  • Ability to safely operate trucks, tractors, skid loaders with attachments, trailers, machinery, and other field equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required.
  • Class A CDL preferred.
  • Must be flexible and able to adjust when instructions or plans change from day to day.
  • Must be dependable and able to work with minimal supervision.

As the crew leader on the jobsite, the Foreman is expected to:

  • Protect and properly care for Penlin Seeding vehicles, equipment, tools, materials, and other company property.

Success in this position will be demonstrated by:

  • Safely and efficiently leading the crew in preparing and completing jobs involving seeding, sod, grading, fertilization, and erosion control.
  • Completing projects on time and according to Penlin Seeding and customer standards.
  • Following all established safety policies and procedures and ensuring the crew does the same.
  • Arriving on time and prepared to work and holding the crew to the same expectation.
  • Taking initiative to load required supplies and equipment upon arrival without unnecessary direction.
  • Providing clear instructions and effectively leading employees to produce quality work.
  • Taking initiative to complete tasks efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Following the direction of the Manager.
  • Working productively and cooperatively with other crew members.
  • Treating coworkers, customers, property owners, contractors, and the public professionally.
  • Taking reasonable care of company vehicles, tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Maintaining proper parking, cleanup, storage, and loss-prevention practices on jobsites.
  • Performing regular cleaning and basic maintenance of trucks and equipment.
  • Minimizing equipment downtime.
  • Maintaining quality workmanship and helping complete projects efficiently.
  • Promptly communicating with management regarding issues that could affect safety, quality, productivity, or project completion.
  • Completing the Daily Work Log in the Buildertrend system at the end of every shift and completing other required reporting or paperwork.
  • Ensuring all crew members properly clock in and out at the shop and job sites using the appropriate municipality/job designation.
  • Helping strengthen and maintain Penlin Seeding’s safety culture.

Working Conditions

Work schedules may vary based on weather, project schedules, seasonal workload, and customer requirements. Early start times, extended workdays, occasional weekends, and overtime may be required.

Employees in this position must be dependable, willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions, and able to perform physically demanding work.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $22.00 – $32.00 per hour
