Position: Spokesperson (Tertiary & Higher Education )
Job Description
Our client is seeking an experienced and highly articulate Spokesperson to serve as the public voice on matters relating to higher education, universities, TVET colleges, student affairs, skills development, and tertiary education policy. This role requires a dynamic communications professional with a passion for education and a deep understanding of South Africa’s higher education landscape. It will be for a 12-24 month Fixed Term Contract.
Responsibilities:
- Act as the primary spokesperson on tertiary and higher education matters.
- Develop and deliver clear, compelling messaging across traditional and digital media platforms.
- Monitor developments within universities, TVET colleges, SETAs, and the broader higher education sector.
- Prepare press releases, media statements, speeches, briefing documents, and opinion pieces.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, media outlets, academic institutions, and key stakeholders.
- Provide strategic communications advice on education-related issues and public engagements.
- Respond to media inquiries and manage media opportunities and interviews.
- Conduct research and provide analysis on higher education policies, legislation, funding, student issues, and sector trends.
- Represent the organization at education-focused events, forums, and stakeholder engagements.
- Support public awareness campaigns and initiatives relating to tertiary and higher education.
Requirements
- Degree in Media, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the South African higher education and tertiary education environment.
- Experience working within, or closely with, universities, TVET colleges, education bodies, or related institutions.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in media relations, communications, stakeholder engagement, or public affairs.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong public speaking, presentation, and media engagement abilities.
- Ability to translate complex education and policy issues into clear and accessible messaging.
- Experience drafting media statements, speeches, and strategic communications material.
- Strong research, analytical, and stakeholder management skills.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel when required.
Requirements
Degree in Media, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field. Demonstrated knowledge of the South African higher education and tertiary education environment. Experience working within, or closely with, universities, TVET colleges, education bodies, or related institutions.
