Job Description

The Regional Psychosocial Support Initiative (REPSSI) is seeking to appoint a qualified Social Worker and Social Auxiliary Worker to support the delivery of mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services to children, youth, and their families in vulnerable communities across Johannesburg.

These positions will play a critical role in strengthening access to community-based psychosocial support services, particularly for children and families facing complex social challenges including migration, poverty, violence, and social exclusion.

Roles and Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be responsible for delivering a range of psychosocial support interventions, including:

  • Conducting home visits to children, youth, and families requiring psychosocial support
  • Providing individual and family counselling where appropriate
  • Identifying needs and facilitating referrals to specialised services (health, protection, legal, education, and social services)
  • Delivering community awareness sessions on mental health and psychosocial wellbeing
  • Supporting capacity building and training activities for caregivers, educators, and community stakeholders on MHPSS
  • Supporting tele-health and remote psychosocial support services where necessary
  • Maintaining accurate case management records and reporting
  • Contributing to safe, ethical and trauma-informed service delivery Service Areas: Services will be delivered across the following locations:
    • Randburg (Ferndale and Diepsloot)
    • Inner City Johannesburg
    • Soweto
  • Support Provided: REPSSI will provide:
    • Transport for service delivery
    • Communication allowance to support tele-health and remote counselling services

Qualifications And Requirements

Social Worker

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work
  • Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP)
  • Minimum 3–5 years’ experience providing psychosocial support to children and families
  • Experience in case management, counselling, and community-based interventions

Social Auxiliary Worker

  • Recognised qualification as a Social Auxiliary Worker
  • Registration with SACSSP
  • At least 2–3 years’ experience supporting social work and psychosocial support interventions
  • Essential Experience and Skills:

Both Positions Require

  • Demonstrated experience working with children, adolescents, and families
  • Experience supporting migrant and South African communities
  • Strong understanding of mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) approaches
  • Experience conducting home visits and community outreach
  • Ability to work with multi-sectoral referral systems
  • Strong communication, documentation, and facilitation skills
  • Ability to work independently in community settings
