The Role

Star Contractors Group is seeking an experienced Shopfitting & Joinery Draftsman for a full-time, on-site position based in the City of Johannesburg.

This role is specifically suited to a candidate with practical drafting experience in the commercial shopfitting, custom joinery, cabinetry or carpentry industry. The successful candidate will prepare accurate technical, shop and manufacturing drawings that can be clearly interpreted by project managers, production teams, installers and site personnel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed shop, technical and manufacturing drawings for commercial shopfitting and custom joinery projects.
  • Produce accurate drawings for cabinetry, counters, display units, wall panelling, fittings, fixtures and other bespoke interior elements.
  • Interpret architectural drawings, design briefs, specifications and site information.
  • Clearly specify dimensions, materials, finishes, hardware and construction details.
  • Update drawings accurately following client, architect, project manager, production or site feedback.
  • Coordinate with architects, designers, engineers, project managers, factory teams and site personnel.
  • Ensure drawings are practical, manufacturable and suitable for installation.
  • Assist with site measurements, as-built information and clarification of design details where required.
  • Maintain organised drawing records, revision control and supporting project documentation.
  • Identify potential drawing or construction conflicts before manufacturing and installation.
  • Support the preparation of project documentation for approvals, tenders and production.
  • Ensure work complies with applicable building standards, project specifications and company quality requirements.

Required Experience and Skills

  • Proven drafting experience within the commercial shopfitting, joinery, cabinetry or bespoke carpentry industry.
  • Strong proficiency in CAD drafting software, preferably AutoCAD or a comparable professional drafting platform.
  • Demonstrable experience producing detailed shop or manufacturing drawings.
  • A sound understanding of joinery construction, cabinetry, timber-based products, boards, laminates, veneers, hardware, fittings and finishes.
  • Ability to translate architectural or interior design concepts into accurate, practical manufacturing drawings.
  • Strong technical drawing, measurement and spatial interpretation abilities.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage revisions and work across multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work full-time on-site in Johannesburg.
  • A relevant qualification in drafting, architectural technology, engineering or a related field, or equivalent relevant industry experience.

Advantageous Experience

  • Experience working on retail, hospitality, office or other commercial interior projects.
  • Experience taking and interpreting site measurements.
  • Experience preparing cutting lists or production documentation.
  • Knowledge of Revit, SketchUp, Cabinet Vision or other specialist joinery and cabinetry software.
  • Experience coordinating drawings with factory production and installation teams.
