Role Purpose/Business Unit:
The Senior Specialist – Storage Platforms Engineer is a pivotal role responsible for the design, implementation, and management of advanced storage solutions. This position requires a deep understanding of storage technologies, including SAN, NAS, and cloud storage, as well as expertise in virtualization and data center operations. This role also leads a team of engineers, providing technical guidance and mentorship, while ensuring our storage infrastructure is optimized for performance, reliability, and scalability. Key responsibilities include developing and implementing storage strategies, troubleshooting complex issues, ensuring and maturing business and technical reporting / MI across all storage capabilities and collaborating with cross-functional teams and vendors to support business objectives and drive commercial outcomes. This role demands strong leadership skills, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and the ability to drive continuous improvement and enabling self-service for storage operations.
Your responsibilities will include:
Technical team leadership: Demonstrated expertise in leading technical teams, with a strong ability to operate independently and make strategic decisions aligned with business priorities and initiatives
Advanced Technical Expertise: Extensive expertise in storage technologies such as Dell Networker, DELL EMC Data Domain, and Dell storage arrays. Knowledge of SAN networking (Brocade & Cisco). Knowledge of storage management for operating system including Windows, Red Hat Linux, AIX and supporting platforms such as VMWare.
Strategic Planning and Execution: Proficient in developing and maintaining policies, procedures, RACI models, and working practices to ensure efficient task management and automation. Experienced in creating product roadmaps, collaborating with vendors, and managing LR tech and financial planning.
Compliance and Audit Management: Accountable for ensuring compliance with audit requirements, including PCI and SOX.
Customer and Vendor Interaction: Monitoring and liaising with systems support teams, application owners, and vendor support to ensure seamless operations and diagnosis and management of faults. Using appropriate software or specialist monitoring tools to maintain awareness and control of hardware and software. Scheduling and supervising all maintenance and installation work, including major configuration changes, upgrades, and vulnerability patching using tools such as DCA.
Coordinating infrastructure requests assigned via the Infrastructure Demand System on Jira.
Innovation and Trend Analysis: Researching storage platform trends to ensure operational efficiencies and staying updated with the latest technologies. Track and report on KPI’s such as Availability, Licence utilization, performance and usage over time.
The ideal candidate for this role will have:
Essential
Matric / Grade 12 essential
3-year related degree or diploma in IT, Engineering, Computer Science or related field
Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience
Desirable
3 years of technical team lead experience preferred.
Desirable Experience
Application of ITIL principles in an operational environment.
Experience with SRE practices and principles is highly desirable.
Experience working in a large agile environment, with multiple teams.
Core competencies, knowledge and experience :
Exceptional hands-on experience with storage platforms and in-depth knowledge of storage concepts.
Proficiency in troubleshooting and resolving technical issues related to storage systems. Excellent problem-solving skills and the capability to address intricate technical challenges
Familiarity with SRE (Site Reliability Engineering) practices, including monitoring, automation, incident response, and post-mortem analysis.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Strong communication skills to effectively interact with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Capacity, Performance and Budget Planning including compiling Long-Range architectural roadmaps, plans and budgets. Skilled in managing RFP processes.
Agile mindset and the ability to collaborate within cross-functional teams.
