Purpose:
As a Senior Planner at Carrol Boyes, you will lead the merchandise planning function by developing and executing category plans that optimise sales, profitability, stock investment and inventory productivity.
You will partner closely with Buying, Merchandise, Retail Operations, Finance and Supply Chain teams to ensure the right products are available at the right time, in the right quantities and at the appropriate levels of investment.
The role requires a commercially astute and highly analytical individual who can translate data into actionable business insights, drive planning strategies and support the achievement of Company sales and profitability objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Merchandise Planning & Forecasting
- Develop and manage annual, seasonal and monthly merchandise plans.
- Establish sales, stock, margin and inventory targets.
- Produce accurate sales and demand forecasts.
- Analyse historical and current trading performance to identify opportunities and risks.
- Monitor performance against plan and recommend corrective actions.
- Support budgeting and strategic planning processes.
Inventory Management & Optimisation
- Manage stock investment levels across assigned categories.
- Monitor inventory productivity, stock turn and weeks of cover.
- Identify opportunities to improve stock efficiency and profitability.
- Reduce aged, obsolete and slow-moving stock.
- Ensure optimal stock availability while minimising excess inventory.
- Develop action plans to address stock risks.
Allocation & Replenishment
- Monitor allocation effectiveness across stores and channels and provide direction to team members doing allocations
- Support promotional, seasonal and new store stock requirements.
- Identify and resolve allocation and replenishment challenges.
Commercial Analysis
- Analyse category performance against sales, stock and margin targets.
- Identify trends, opportunities and risks impacting performance.
- Conduct profitability and inventory analyses.
- Support promotional planning and markdown strategies.
- Provide recommendations to improve category performance.
- Participate in weekly and monthly trade reviews.
Reporting & Business Insights
- Produce accurate planning reports, dashboards and forecasts.
- Interpret complex data and provide meaningful business insights.
- Present findings and recommendations to management.
- Ensure planning information remains accurate and up to date.
- Support executive decision-making through data-driven analysis.
Team Leadership & Development
- Provide guidance and support to Junior Planners.
- Assist in developing planning capability within the team.
- Share best practices and planning methodologies.
- Support training and development initiatives.
- Promote collaboration and continuous improvement.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Buying, Merchandise, Retail Operations, Finance and Supply Chain teams.
- Influence commercial decisions through planning insights.
- Support product launches, promotional events and business initiatives.
- Build effective working relationships across the organisation.
- Facilitate alignment between planning and operational objectives.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree in Commerce, Retail Management, Supply Chain, Statistics, Economics or related field.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in merchandise planning, retail planning or a similar commercial planning role.
- Proven experience managing category plans and inventory investment.
- Experience within a retail environment is essential.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel and reporting skills.
- Experience with merchandise planning systems advantageous.
