Senior Financial Accountant Jobs in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa at OVEX
Title: Senior Financial Accountant
Company: OVEX
Location: Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa
We are seeking an experienced Financial Accountant (3-5 years) to own our month-end close accounting, assist in management reporting, the audit process, and to review the work of our Junior Financial Accountant. This is an opportunity for a technically strong accountant to step into an accounting role with real ownership over the numbers and the team. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring smooth financial operations.
OVEX is building the future of how money moves across Africa. We are the continent’s institutional foreign exchange and cross-border payments infrastructure – providing wholesale FX execution and settlement to banks, fintechs, and corporates with deep liquidity, local currency credit lines, and real-time trading capabilities.
Our platform supports everything from instant crypto conversions and high-volume OTC trading to international remittances and enterprise API integrations. With offices across five global cities and regulatory licenses spanning five jurisdictions, OVEX operates at the intersection of African finance and global markets. Built on institutional-grade security infrastructure, we are the trusted partner for the institutions that move Africa’s money.
OVEX FAST-FACTS:
- Africa’s most robust on and off-ramp ecosystem for local currencies, enabling seamless conversion and settlement across the continent
- Proprietary payment rails settling cross-border transactions in hours, not days – eliminating the friction of traditional correspondent banking
- Deep liquidity pools and direct banking relationships delivering tight spreads and institutional-grade execution at scale
- Trusted by banks, fintechs, corporates, and financial intermediaries across Africa – billions in FX volume processed
- Teams in Cape Town, Johannesburg, London, Paris, and Dubai
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Team Oversight: Supervise the Junior Financial Accountant by reviewing all bank reconciliations, journals, and ledgers they prepare before it goes to management for final sign-off.
- Month-End Close Ownership: Own the full month-end close process end-to-end — journals, accruals, prepayments, exchange rates — and keep all supporting schedules current.
- Management Accounts & Departmental Reporting: Prepare initial departmental reports, per entity and assist in the preparation of monthly management accounts.
- Budgets & Variance Analysis: Assist with the annual budget preparation and produce budget-vs-actual variance analysis with commentary for leadership.
- Balance Sheet & Inter-company: Own balance sheet reviews across all entities, and own inter-company reconciliations and alignments.
- VAT & Tax: Review and sign off VAT and tax calculations, VAT201 reconciliations, and input-VAT compliance.
- Cost & Expense Analysis: Analyse cost trends and expense/reimbursement control accounts, flagging anomalies and providing commentary on cost control. Oversee the junior financial accountants expense processing.
- Audit Management: Take ownership of managing the audit support by completing monthly schedules – ensuring all supporting documentation and evidence is prepared, organised, and uploaded on time – and act as the point of contact for the auditors under guidance of management.
- Process Improvement: Identify process inefficiencies and work with the Finance Manager/Senior Finance Manager and in-house developers to build more robust financial infrastructure and expand automation.
THE IDEAL PERSON FOR THIS ROLE WILL HAVE:
- Education: An accounting or finance degree is required; SAIPA or equivalent.
- Experience: 3-5 years in a finance/accounting role, ideally within a multi-entity, multi-currency organisation, with strong exposure to bank reconciliations, month-end close, management accounts, and audit involvement.
- Technical Savvy: Strong Excel skills; comfortable using AI tools such as Claude to review and action automated outputs. Proficiency in SQL and Python is a major advantage although not required.
- Mindset: Comfortable moving from doing the work to reviewing and owning it, a strong sense of accountability, and a talent for mentoring junior staff in a fast-paced environment.
REPORTING LINE:
This role reports to the Senior Finance Manager, who provides oversight review of all reports.
LIFE AT OVEX:
- Growth: We take mentorship seriously and are committed to your professional and personal development.
- Office: We have a working arrangement of one set work from home day per week and semi flexible hours.
- Culture: We have a literal “open door policy” (no doors) and host frequent team-building events where colleagues become friends.
- Impact: This is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a growing organisation that is truly revolutionising the financial world.
