Position Overview

We are seeking an energetic and experienced Senior Communications Manager to lead organizational messaging, media relations, public affairs, and stakeholder engagement efforts. This leadership role is responsible for developing compelling communication strategies, managing public information initiatives, supporting executive communications, and ensuring organizational priorities are effectively communicated across diverse audiences.

The ideal candidate will be a highly skilled communicator with strong writing abilities, strategic thinking skills, media relations experience, and a passion for mission-driven work. This individual must be capable of managing sensitive communications, navigating complex public issues, and translating technical or operational information into clear, accessible messaging.

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute digital engagement strategies across social media platforms, websites, email communications, and emerging communication channels to increase community awareness, stakeholder engagement, and public participation.
  • Monitor social media and public discourse to identify trends, misinformation, emerging issues, reputational risks, and opportunities for proactive communication.
  • Manage and supervise communications and engagement tasks, including assigning work priorities, providing mentorship, conducting performance oversight, and ensuring timely completion of projects and deliverables.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate strategic communication and public information plans aligned with organizational goals, operational priorities, funding objectives, and community initiatives.
  • Serve as a lead advisor on public messaging, external affairs management, stakeholder communications, and media engagement strategies.
  • Draft, review, edit, and oversee the production of press releases, media statements, speeches, presentations, newsletters, annual reports, talking points, briefing documents, public notices, marketing materials, and multimedia communications.
  • Ensure all written and visual communications maintain professionalism, consistency, factual accuracy, organizational branding standards, and adherence to AP style and applicable public information standards.
  • Coordinate and manage media relations activities, including responding to media inquiries, arranging interviews, developing press materials, cultivating relationships with journalists and news outlets, and proactively identifying opportunities for positive media coverage.
  • Coordinate crisis communications and public information efforts during emergencies, critical incidents, public safety events, or sensitive organizational matters, ensuring timely, accurate, and coordinated dissemination of information.
  • Represent the organization at public meetings, conferences, community events, government meetings, stakeholder convenings, and media appearances as assigned.
  • Coordinate public speaking engagements, executive communications, and presentation materials for leadership, board members, and organizational representatives.
  • Lead research and data collection efforts to support communication strategies, public education campaigns, advocacy initiatives, and evidence-based messaging.
  • Translate complex operational, policy, funding, behavioral health, regulatory, and community service information into accessible and understandable public communications.
  • Coordinate community outreach and public engagement initiatives designed to strengthen partnerships with governmental entities, service providers, advocates, businesses, healthcare organizations, educational institutions, public safety agencies, and community stakeholders.
  • Assist in the development and promotion of public awareness campaigns, educational initiatives, fundraising efforts, community events, and strategic initiatives.
  • Oversee photography, videography, graphic design, branding, and multimedia production activities supporting organizational communications and storytelling efforts.
  • Maintain communication calendars, campaign timelines, media tracking systems, and records related to public information activities.
  • Monitor analytics and performance metrics related to media coverage, website traffic, social media engagement, digital campaigns, and public outreach initiatives, and prepare reports summarizing communication effectiveness.
  • Ensure communications comply with applicable confidentiality requirements, public records standards, grant conditions, organizational policies, and legal or regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership, program leadership, partner agencies, and external stakeholders to ensure coordinated and unified messaging across initiatives and jurisdictions.
  • Support strategic advocacy and governmental affairs efforts by assisting with policy communications, legislative updates, briefing materials, and stakeholder education initiatives.
  • Supervise editing, proofreading, and approval workflows to ensure all external and internal communications are accurate, timely, professional, and aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Perform additional communications, engagement, public affairs, marketing, or strategic initiatives as assigned in support of organizational operations and mission objectives.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in public relations, journalism, strategic communications, public affairs, marketing, or a related field.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with the ability to craft clear, compelling, and audience-specific content.
  • Strong media relations experience, including experience coordinating with local, regional, or national media outlets.
  • Excellent research and analytical abilities to support fact-based messaging and strategic communication planning.
  • Experience managing social media platforms, digital communication strategies, and multimedia engagement initiatives.
  • Outstanding verbal communication and public speaking skills.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing editing, proofreading, branding, and communication approval processes.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and high-profile communications in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational skills, sound judgment, discretion, and professionalism.
  • Experience working in nonprofit, government, behavioral health, public affairs, emergency response, healthcare, housing, or community-based environments preferred.
