Job Summary
This is a Senior Credit role to lead a credit team and be responsible for managing credit risk across a defined portfolio of clients (FIs and NBFIs) across products, by providing: leadership, credit structuring advice and guidance to enable the bank to achieve agreed business targets, execute the overall strategy and improve performance in line with the business strategy and objectives. Manage defined credit portfolio within optimal credit metrics. Influence business strategies by setting the correct credit appetite for sectors, existing and new clients.
The incumbent is expected to have strong technical credit risk management skills in CIB products and be a subject matter expert on the following sub-portfolios, among others: Micro Finance Institutions in South Africa and in Rest of Africa, Global Markets Credit portfolio (including International Hedge Funds, and Prime Services / Brokerage Business, with detailed working and structuring knowledge on various markets trading and derivate products), Private Equity Funds portfolio (with structuring knowledge of NAV and subscription facilities), Structured ring-fenced SPVs and Securitizations vehicles, and Banks Credit portfolio, among others.
The candidate is to lead a team of Credit Analysts and to have strong credit working knowledge on the following:
(1) Global Market Products, including: Structured Trading, Counterparty Risk Trading, Derivative Counterparty Exposure Management, and Single Name Issuer Risk for South Africa and Africa). Strong working knowledge on FX trades, FX and interest rate swaps, total return swaps, bond trades, commodity trades, and equity trades; with a strong working knowledge on mitigating factors on PFE/pre-settlement and settlement risks (e.g. ISDA, CSAs, GMRAs GMSLAs, CLS, and DvP, among others).
(2) Credit structuring knowledge in respect of credit facilities provided to Micro-Finance Institutions, Private Equity Funds, and ring-fenced structured SPVs and securitization vehicles, among others.
(3) TxB, FI trade finance facilities, and Money Market facilities provided to Banks, and DFIs in South Africa, Africa, and global FIs.
(4) Candidate is to ensure responsible and measurable risk taking, whilst retaining commercially minded solutions. Also, the candidate is to facilitate business enablement, closely working with various Business Teams.
The candidate is to act as a conduit for sanctioning of all credit related requests on a defined portfolio of FI clients against which Absa Group Ltd (i.e. Absa SA and all Africa Regions / subsidiaries in Africa) have credit facilities to, collaborating with all key stakeholders including Heads of Credit in-country, Coverage Bankers, Trade Finance Teams, Treasury Teams, Global Markets Teams, Investment Banking Division Team, Risks Teams (Credit, Markets, Models Teams, etc).
To develop tactical strategy and delivery plans, formulate associated practice and to ensure end to end credit risk management on a defined portfolio in CIB Credit Risk.
Job Description
Accountability: Credit Risk Management:
To take ownership and control of credit risk related work on a defined portfolio of FI and NBFI clients against which Absa Group Ltd has credit facilities.
To review quality credit assessments and present bespoke/bankable solutions pertaining to clients and transactions in the portfolio.
Actively partake and provide input into Deal Forums ensuring that credit risk associated with business opportunities are pro-actively highlighted and managed
Network with stakeholders and clients to obtain a commercial awareness of the industry specifics leading to improved customer solutioning
Manage and report on the end-to-end credit process ensuring service delivery exceeds the expectations of stakeholders (Turnarounds, client visits)
Proactively manage the credit risk on the portfolio by completing timely reviews, ensuring conditions are up to date and monitored
Credit sanctioning within Delegated Authority.
Manage the credit sanctioning routes ensuring that papers are sent to the correct sanctioning authority
Sanction credit applications within the requirements of the credit policy and in line with mandate
Obtain an in-depth industry understanding of local markets to better understand the risk profile of our portfolio
Remain up to date on legal changes as well as Basel requirements to reduce the risk associated with the portfolio
Present credit papers/reviews to the correct sanctioning authority/credit committee
Conduct client visits and increase/review/EWL discussions with Senior management of clients
To produce relevant management information and manage exposures including the maintenance of the relevant systems
Representing Credit to Senior Management in various committees, presenting analysis of the aggregate portfolio risk and composition.
Build and manage relationships with key relevant business partners to ensure responsible risk taking whilst retaining commercially minded solutions.
Work closely with key partners to review and improve quality of MI over time.
Support the management in the delivery of a sound governance process around the Credit MI’s delivered by the team.
Development of analytical tools to better understand and communicate risk concentrations and drivers of risk and capital.
Facilitate / and or make the credit sanctioning decisions ensuring responsible risk decisions are made. Credit functions cut across the credit lifecycle, including risk grading, credit analysis, sanctioning, limit management, restructuring, and portfolio, among others.
Maintain and manage the relevant portfolio within the defined appetite levels.
To be an expert with an advanced understanding of Macro economic environment, industries and Bank products
Review and enhancement of systems and processes with a view towards efficiency and automation whilst managing the current operational environment.
Explore new, improved and alternative ways of lending or restructuring credit to ensure an efficient and improved end to end risk delivery.
Effectively communicate developments within areas of activity to all relevant stakeholders.
Accountability: People management
Directly lead and manage a team of Credit Analysts, and indirectly in-country Credit Teams in respect of the defined portfolio, supporting in creating a high-performance culture of individuals who are engaged.
Build and manage the teams ensuring the delivery and compilation of high quality and to achieve excellent business results through continuous people development and mentoring activities.
Enhance the skill base of the credit analyst pool through active management initiatives and leading by example, on the strength of technical proficiency
Ensure the development of a high-performing team through embedding formal
Performance Development and informal coaching.
Determine and analyze training and development needs for direct reports. Ensure that identified training is budgeted.
Develop workforce planning and ensure recruitment strategy supports it.
Address performance issues promptly using the correct channels
Accountability: Stakeholder Management
Build strong relationships with Absa internal and external stakeholders. Internal stakeholders to include all Coverage and Products Heads and their Teams (e.g. NBFI, FI, Global Markets, IBD, TxB, ARO) and Risk Executives – CIB and Group Risk.
Effectively communicate developments within areas of activity to all relevant stakeholders.
Ensure impeccable and timeous service levels
Ensure that all teams within the pod work closely together to deliver a high level of client
Accountability: Data and System Management
Proactively utilize the systems and tools available for Credit Risk and partake in the ongoing development and feedback of these systems to deliver and enhanced automated credit function.
Manage all administrative and operational aspects of the relevant portfolio of clients ensuring completeness, accuracy and validity of data.
Develop, negotiate and implement appropriate Risk mitigation strategies.
To produce relevant management information and manage exposures including the accurate maintenance of the data on relevant risk systems.
Monitor adherence to policies and SLAs on a continuous basis and identify any deviations and possible concerns.
Create and maintain an accurate due diligence record of the client portfolio, detailing what facilities they have and the associated terms and conditions.
Monitor the client business performance and identify relevant risks to ensure early identification of change in the client’s business or operating environment and watchlist accordingly.
Accountability: Governance
Ensure that the Bank’s credit policies and philosophy are complied with.
Ensure understanding and adherence to relevant Legal requirements relevant to the Credit Lifecycle and specific industry.
Regulatory legislation and the changing environment require an up to date knowledge of changes and the impact on credit risk and capital adequacy.
Complete the necessary training requirements and Compliance processes in a timely manner.

Bachelor`s Degrees and Advanced Diplomas: Business, Commerce and Management Studies (Required)
