Pay: Starting at $20.00/hour + overtime after 40 hours
Position Overview
Rock River Laboratory is seeking Seasonal Agricultural Sampling Technicians to support our field-based soil and plant tissue sampling operations throughout Iowa.
This is a hands-on, outdoor position involving travel to agricultural fields, sample collection, GPS/GIS mapping, data collection, equipment operation, and interaction with growers and customers. Technicians will use company-provided vehicles, ATVs, trailers, and sampling equipment to complete assigned fieldwork accurately and efficiently.
No prior sampling experience is required. Training will be provided. This position is ideal for students, recent graduates, seasonal workers, or individuals interested in agriculture, precision agriculture, agronomy, or field-based work.
Longer hours and overtime should be expected during peak sampling periods. Occasional overnight travel may also be required.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect soil and/or plant tissue samples accurately and efficiently.
- Label, document, and prepare samples to ensure accurate tracking and high-quality data collection.
- Perform GPS/GIS boundary mapping of agricultural fields and crops.
- Review field information to determine appropriate sampling locations and requirements.
- Travel throughout assigned areas of Iowa to farms and agricultural properties.
- Safely operate company-provided pickup trucks, trailers, ATVs, and sampling equipment.
- Maintain sampling equipment, including ATVs, automatic soil samplers, GPS units, tablets, and other field equipment.
- Perform basic equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Track daily work activity and complete required documentation and reporting.
- Maintain professional and courteous communication with growers, customers, and partners.
- Follow all company safety procedures, sampling protocols, and data quality standards.
- Represent Rock River Laboratory professionally at all times.
Requirements
To be successful in this position, candidates should have:
- A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; a motor vehicle record check is required.
- Ability and willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and sun.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and walk extended distances through agricultural fields.
- Ability to work long hours during peak sampling periods.
- Experience or comfort operating a pickup truck with a trailer and ATV.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to perform minor troubleshooting.
- Strong map-reading and navigation skills.
- Basic computer and technology skills, including email, Excel, tablets, GPS, and navigation applications.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage daily assignments with minimal supervision.
- Strong self-motivation and reliability.
- Ability to work effectively with internal coordinators and established team processes.
- Professional communication and customer service skills.
- Willingness to learn and complete company-provided training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience or education in agriculture, agronomy, precision agriculture, or a related field.
- Previous field sampling experience.
- Familiarity with GPS or GIS software and technology.
- Experience operating agricultural or field equipment.
- Strong interest in agriculture and working directly with growers.

Work Environment & Schedule

Occasional overnight stays may be required depending on sampling locations and workload.
Rock River Laboratory is looking for dependable, self-motivated individuals who enjoy working outdoors, are comfortable working independently, and have an interest in agriculture and field-based work.
Pay: $18.00 – $20.00 per hour
