Position: WHOLE SCHOOL DIRECTOR OF HOCKEY

Situated in Sandton and Alexandra, St David’s is a Marist, Catholic, Independent School for boys of all faiths. We cater for boys from Grade 000 to Grade 12 and offer weekly boarding in the College.

Established in 1941, St David’s Marist Inanda forms part of the Marist educational community which has at its core a strong value base, primarily focused on “Humility, Simplicity and Modesty” as espoused by our founder St Marcellin Champagnat in 1816. With the promotion of our current incumbent, St David’s Marist Inanda seeks to appoint a dynamic, experienced sport leader in the following position:

WHOLE SCHOOL DIRECTOR OF HOCKEY

St David’s Marist Inanda seeks to appoint an exceptional Director of Hockey to lead and shape a whole‑school programme to further grow and develop the hockey club. This is a full‑time leadership role for a candidate who combines high‑performance expertise with a deep commitment to the formation of boys within a values‑based environment.

Rooted in the Marist tradition, the appointment calls for a leader who embodies humility, presence, simplicity, family spirit and a love of work. The successful candidate will understand that success is measured not only in results, but in the growth of boys as young men of character.

The ideal candidate will:

  • have a relevant coaching qualification (SAHA or FIH Level 3 advantageous) and a strong understanding of school‑based sport.
  • have a proven track record of leading and developing successful hockey programmes, with experience in management, organisation and administration.
  • have experience working across a full age range, with the ability to design and implement a coherent programme throughout the school.
  • have a clear understanding and appreciation of the nuances of boys’ education, and the role sport plays in the formation of young men.
  • have demonstrated experience in long‑term athlete development, including participation, progression and performance pathways.
  • have credibility within school, club or provincial hockey structures, and the ability to contribute to the development of hockey provincially and/or nationally.
  • clearly understand the professional flexibility required in a senior leadership role, with sound judgement, resilience and a strong sense of purpose.
  • be able to work with the College Deputy Head of Extramurals, Prep Director of Sport and Senior Leadership Teams to provide strategic direction for hockey, aligning the programme with the broader vision, culture and values of St David’s Marist Inanda.
  • be able to ensure that all aspects of the hockey programme are delivered with consistency, integrity and alignment to school expectations, including coaching standards, player welfare and conduct.
  • be open to new ideas and able to lead change, with confidence in the use of technology and performance analysis tools to enhance programme delivery.
  • have outstanding personal qualities and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead, support and challenge coaches, build relationships and manage resources effectively.
  • establish and evaluate clear programme goals and standards that reflect a whole‑school approach and promote both participation and excellence.
  • embody and promote the values and characteristics of being an educator at St David’s within the Marist tradition, inspiring boys and staff through presence, humility and integrity.
  • promote high standards in all aspects of hockey, including performance, behaviour, commitment and sportsmanship, while supporting the wellbeing and development of each boy.
  • be a strategic thinker with the ability to identify opportunities, address challenges and implement practical, sustainable solutions.
  • comply with the professional duties outlined in the St David’s staff Code of Conduct and engage positively in appraisal and performance management processes.
  • work collaboratively with key staff across the School to ensure alignment between the hockey programme and the wider co‑curricular and pastoral environment.
