Afrikelp in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa, is seeking a Research and Development Chemist to join their team. This full-time position reports to the NPD & QC Manager and involves developing and optimizing agricultural input formulations to support plant performance.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, optimize, and scale formulations for agricultural inputs, including biostimulants.

Assess stability of formulations under various environmental conditions.

Conduct compatibility studies with fertilizers and crop protection solutions.

Evaluate raw materials and active ingredients for performance and shelf life.

Create testing protocols and quality control methods.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure product feasibility and compliance.

Stay informed on industry trends, technologies, and regulations.

Assist in scaling formulations from laboratory to production.

Document research findings and processes in compliance with standards.

Write scientific reports and assist with extraction and analysis.

Maintain and validate SOPs and work instructions.

Support quality control with ad hoc responsibilities.

Operate lab equipment following good practices.

Review production schedules for quality control.

Manage lab inventory and consumables.

Follow health and safety procedures.

Liaise with service providers for equipment maintenance.

Ensure result validity with external providers.

Investigate process improvements and analyze products routinely.

Maintain server files and proper lab housekeeping.

Minimum Requirements

Honours Degree in Chemistry, Formulation Science, Agricultural Science, or related field.

Master’s or Ph.D. preferred.

Proficiency in GC-MS and/or LC-MS.

Extensive experience with analytical techniques.

Knowledge of regulatory requirements for agricultural formulations.

Strong problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.

Ability to work independently and in teams.

Excellent communication and technical writing skills.

Experience with natural extracts, seaweed, or microbial formulations is advantageous.

Knowledge of industry trends and challenges.

Experience with scale-up processes.

Ownership mindset, initiative, and decision-making confidence.
