Job Title: Refrigeration and HVAC Mechanic
Location: George, Western Cape, South Africa
Job Type: Full-Time / Permanent
Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor / Technical Manager
Job Purpose:
To perform skilled mechanical and electrical work in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of industrial, commercial, and domestic refrigeration and HVAC systems. The role ensures all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable South African standards, SANS regulations, and OHS legislation.
Key Responsibilities:1. Installation & Commissioning
Install HVAC and refrigeration units including split systems, chillers, cold rooms, freezer rooms, VRF/VRV systems, and ducted systems.
Assemble and install refrigeration lines, electrical wiring, and control systems according to SANS and manufacturer specifications.
Charge systems with refrigerants and ensure correct operation through performance testing and balancing.
2. Maintenance & Inspections
Perform routine preventative maintenance on HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
Check system performance, pressures, temperatures, and electrical parameters.
Identify worn or failing components and recommend/perform necessary replacements.
3. Fault Finding & Repairs
Diagnose equipment malfunctions using testing instruments and visual inspection.
Repair or replace defective parts such as compressors, motors, thermostats, contactors, solenoid valves, and fans.
Detect and seal refrigerant leaks and recharge systems according to environmental protocols.
4. Compliance & Documentation
Ensure all work is compliant with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, SANS 10147 (Refrigeration Systems), and SAQCC Gas regulations.
Maintain accurate job cards, fault reports, refrigerant logs, and service documentation.
Safely handle, recover, and dispose of refrigerants in line with legal environmental requirements.
5. Client Communication & Support
Provide technical support to clients and clearly communicate identified faults and proposed solutions.
Offer energy-saving recommendations and efficiency improvements where applicable.
Ensure professional conduct and high-quality workmanship on all assignments.
Minimum Requirements:
Qualification:
Red Seal Trade Test (Refrigeration Mechanic – Section 13/26D)
N3 Certificate or higher (advantageous)
Experience:
3–5 years of experience in HVAC/R installations, service, and repair
Experience with commercial and industrial systems is strongly preferred
Certifications & Registrations:
SAQCC Gas Registered Refrigeration Practitioner (MANDATORY)
Valid Driver’s License (Code B/EB)
Safe Handling of Refrigerants Certificate
First Aid / Health and Safety training (advantageous)
Skills and Competencies:
Excellent fault-finding and diagnostic skills (mechanical and electrical)
Knowledge of electrical control systems and refrigeration cycle
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics
Proficiency with tools, gauges, and test instruments used in HVAC/R
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Self-motivated, safety-conscious, and able to work independently or as part of a team
Working Conditions:
Based in George, but must be willing to travel across the Western Cape as required
May involve work in confined spaces, rooftops, and exposed conditions
Occasional standby and overtime duties for emergency repairs
