Job Brief

We are seeking a detail-oriented and commercially minded Quantity Surveyor to join our team at BAE, with a strong leaning towards electrical project costing. The ideal candidate will be responsible for cost estimating, bill of quantities preparation, tendering, contract administration, and cost control across our solar PV and BESS projects. This role is key to ensuring projects are accurately costed, competitively procured, and delivered within budget.

Key Responsibilities

Cost Estimating & Budgeting

•     Develop and maintain project budgets, benchmarking costs against historical data and market rates.

•     Price variations and change orders, and assess their impact on the overall project budget.

Tendering & Procurement

•     Prepare tender documentation and manage the tender process for subcontractors, suppliers, and materials.

•     Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations, negotiating pricing and terms.

•     Compile tender comparisons and make recommendations for contract award.

Contract Administration

•     Administer contracts in accordance with applicable standard forms (e.g. JBCC, NEC, FIDIC) and BAE’s internal procedures.

•     Prepare and assess interim payment certificates, valuations, and final accounts.

•     Manage claims, variations, and disputes with contractors and suppliers.

Cost Control & Reporting

•     Monitor and report on project costs against budget throughout the project lifecycle.

•     Identify cost risks and savings opportunities, and advise the project team accordingly.

•     Maintain accurate cost records and produce regular cost reports for management and clients.

Project & Site Coordination

•     Work closely with the Project Manager and technical team to align costing with project design and delivery timelines.

•     Conduct site visits and measurements to verify quantities and progress for valuation purposes.

•     Support procurement scheduling to ensure materials and equipment are costed and ordered in line with project timelines.

Qualifications

Qualifying Criteria

•     Education: Bachelor’s degree or National Diploma in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field.

•     Experience: 3+ years’ experience as a Quantity Surveyor, ideally with exposure to electrical, solar PV, or renewable energy projects.

•     Skills: Strong cost estimating and BOQ preparation skills; proficiency in Excel and QS software (e.g. CCS Candy, WinQS, or Buildsmart); ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and specifications; working knowledge of standard contract forms (JBCC, NEC, or FIDIC).

•     Attributes: Detail-oriented, strong numerical and negotiation skills, able to work independently and under pressure to meet deadlines, with strong written and verbal communication.

•     Location: Candidates must already reside in Cape Town and be able to travel in Africa.

Preferred

•     Direct experience costing electrical, solar PV, or BESS installations.

•     Familiarity with the local electrical and solar supply chain, including material and equipment pricing.

•     Experience administering EPC contracts on commercial or utility-scale renewable energy projects.

•     Professional registration (e.g. SACQSP, RICS) advantageous.

What We Offer

•     A dynamic role in a growing EPC solar energy business, working on large-scale solar PV and BESS projects.

•     Exposure to the full commercial lifecycle of projects, from costing through to final account.
