ABOUT DUO MEDICAL
DUO Medical is a new South African medical-device company specialising in premium equipment and disposable products used in interventional pain procedures.
Although newly established, the company is backed by shareholders with extensive healthcare, medical-device and interventional pain experience. DUO Medical represents high-quality German-manufactured products and aims to become a trusted partner to specialists and hospitals throughout Southern Africa.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are looking for an experienced, commercially driven Product & Business Development Manager to introduce our products to the South African market, build sustainable sales and help establish the business.
This is initially a hands-on sales, product-development and clinical-support role—not a desk-based management position. The successful candidate will generate sales personally, develop customer relationships, support procedures in theatre and establish DUO Medical’s presence in priority territories.
As sales, the product portfolio and the team grow, the role may develop into a broader leadership position with responsibility for people, operations, budgets, strategy and company performance. Progression will depend on individual performance, demonstrated leadership, business requirements and DUO Medical’s growth.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Sales and business development
• Take direct responsibility for developing sales across South Africa.
• Build relationships with pain specialists, anaesthetists, neurosurgeons, orthopaedic and spine surgeons, radiologists, hospital groups, theatre personnel, procurement departments and other decision-makers.
• Arrange product presentations, demonstrations, evaluations and trial cases, converting clinical interest into sustainable sales.
• Manage the sales process from initial contact and product evaluation through quotation, procurement approval and ongoing use.
• Develop territory plans and forecasts, maintain accurate sales records and monitor competitor activity and market requirements.
• Assist with hospital listings, procurement processes, contracts and tenders.
• Meet agreed sales, margin and customer-development targets.
• Report to the shareholders on performance, opportunities, risks and market developments.
Product and clinical support
• Become DUO Medical’s product expert, understanding product applications, specifications, benefits, limitations and appropriate use.
• Work with the company’s German manufacturing partners to obtain training and technical support.
• Coordinate product launches and develop accurate, compliant training and sales materials.
• Train customers, representatives and team members in the appropriate use of the products.
• Gather clinical and commercial feedback, identify portfolio opportunities and support accurate, ethical product positioning.
Theatre support
• Provide hands-on technical product support during interventional pain procedures.
• Coordinate case bookings, equipment, stock and product availability.
• Assist with product preparation and procedural setup within the appropriate scope of the role.
• Support clinicians and theatre personnel in safe, effective product use without extending into independent clinical decision-making.
• Follow up after cases and be available for planned procedures and reasonable urgent or after-hours support.
Territory, operations and network development
• Build DUO Medical’s presence initially in Gauteng and progressively across South Africa.
• Identify priority customers, territories and market opportunities.
• Help identify, evaluate and develop suitable representatives, agents and distributors.
• Assist in establishing a reliable national sales, distribution and case-support network.
• Develop relationships with key opinion leaders and represent DUO Medical at relevant industry events.
• Help establish efficient systems for quotations, orders, deliveries, case bookings and customer follow-up.
• Assist with demand forecasting, inventory planning and stock control.
• Help manage demonstration and loan equipment, theatre kits and consignment stock.
• Maintain product traceability and accurate sales, training, stock and case-support records.
FUTURE LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
DUO Medical wants to appoint someone capable of growing beyond a sales and product-management role. As the company expands, responsibilities may grow to include:
• National sales leadership, commercial strategy and representative management.
• Distributor performance and supplier relationships.
• Budgets, forecasts and financial performance.
• Operations, supply chain, regulatory and quality coordination.
• Strategic planning, shareholder reporting and overall business performance.
The candidate must therefore generate sales immediately while demonstrating the potential to lead a growing medical-device company.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
Essential experience
• Relevant experience in the South African medical-device, medical-equipment or specialised healthcare sector.
• A successful track record in medical-device sales or business development.
• Practical experience supporting procedures in theatre or a comparable clinical environment.
• Experience working with specialists, theatre personnel, procurement departments and healthcare decision-makers.
• Experience managing a territory, customer portfolio or product range.
• Demonstrable success in developing customers and converting evaluations into ongoing sales.
• Ability to communicate complex technical information and maintain disciplined sales reporting, forecasting and follow-up.
• Willingness to remain personally involved in sales and clinical support during the company’s growth phase.
Experience in interventional pain, spine, neuromodulation, surgical devices, radiofrequency procedures or a related field will be strongly advantageous.
Qualifications
• A relevant tertiary qualification in healthcare, life sciences, medical technology, business, commerce or a related discipline is preferred.
• Clinical, theatre, technical, medical-device, sales or management training will be advantageous.
KEY COMPETENCIES
• Strong sales ability and a proven record of commercial achievement.
• Clinical credibility and confidence in theatre.
• Excellent communication, relationship-building and negotiation skills.
• Initiative, resilience, sound judgement, accountability and strong follow-through.
• Ability to work independently on both strategic and practical tasks.
• Ability to train, coach and influence others.
• Potential to manage people, budgets and operations as the company grows.
• High ethical standards and commitment to patient safety and responsible product promotion.
PRACTICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Based primarily in Gauteng, with extensive travel throughout South Africa and possible regional travel as the company expands.
• A valid driver’s licence and reliable transport.
• Flexibility regarding working hours, as theatre cases and travel may fall outside normal office hours.
• Comfort working in a start-up environment where systems, territories and teams are still developing.
• Appointment may be subject to reference, qualification, background and credential verification.
THE PERSON WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The ideal candidate is an experienced medical-device professional who wants more than a conventional sales-representative role but remains willing to generate sales personally. This opportunity will suit someone who enjoys supporting clinical procedures, developing new markets and taking responsibility for outcomes.
We need someone who wants to help build a company rather than inherit a completed structure and who has the ambition and capability to progress into senior leadership. Advancement will be earned through measurable sales performance, sound judgement, reliable execution and demonstrated leadership.
REMUNERATION
DUO Medical offers a market-related package commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications, relevant experience and sales record. The structure will be discussed with shortlisted candidates.
HOW TO APPLY
Please submit:
• A current CV.
• A brief cover letter outlining your relevant medical-device, sales and theatre-support experience.
• A summary of the products, clinical specialties, territories or customer portfolios in which you have worked.
