Job Purpose and Summary

The Operations & Maintenance Manager is responsible for the effective operation, maintenance, reliability and compliance of the Langlaagte Motherstation and all customer sites, including sites in KwaZulu-Natal.

The role provides hands-on technical leadership across maintenance, equipment reliability, health and safety, customer sites, CNG supply infrastructure and operational support. It ensures that natural gas equipment, infrastructure and installations are maintained to required operational, statutory, safety and technical standards.

The position leads Technicians and Interns, manages preventative and corrective maintenance programmes, supports installations and commissioning, oversees PLC/HMI/SCADA systems, manages critical spares and maintenance expenditure, and ensures reliable customer service.

The role works closely with Operations, Distribution, Projects, Sales, Finance, SHEQ, OEMs and customers.

Key Responsibilities

Operations & Maintenance

• Implement and manage preventative and corrective maintenance programmes across company assets and customer sites.
• Ensure scheduled and emergency maintenance is completed effectively and within required timeframes.
• Oversee PRPs, compressors, boosters, dispensers, regulators, piping, electrical systems and associated infrastructure.
• Conduct inspections and ensure equipment and installations are maintained to prevent failures and gas leaks.
• Provide hands-on troubleshooting across mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and instrumentation systems.
• Direct and delegate work to Technicians and Interns.
• Maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, repair and equipment-condition records.
• Prepare monthly maintenance and asset reports for the General Manager – Operations.
• Identify and maintain appropriate levels of critical spares.
• Manage maintenance expenditure and overtime within approved budgets.
• Ensure equipment is calibrated and maintained as required.
• Maintain clean, orderly and professional work areas.

Motherstation & Customer Sites

• Ensure the Langlaagte Motherstation and customer sites operate safely, reliably and efficiently.
• Oversee technical and maintenance requirements at customer sites.
• Conduct regular equipment, pipework and site inspections and audits.
• Ensure compliance with applicable EIA, MHI, Health and Safety and other statutory requirements.
• Maintain required certifications and compliance documentation.
• Ensure availability and efficient rotation of CNG tube trailers.
• Monitor CNG supply, stock, losses and trailer utilisation.
• Ensure SCADA availability and functionality for 24/7 monitoring.
• Provide technical support and emergency call-outs when required.
• Liaise with customer technical personnel to resolve requirements and maintain positive relationships.
• Ensure installations comply with supplier requirements and applicable South African and international standards, codes and Acts.

Installations, Projects & Commissioning

• Assist with installation and commissioning of natural gas equipment and infrastructure.
• Support projects from systems integration through installation, commissioning and start-up.
• Work with OEMs, Projects and technical teams to ensure required performance, reliability and functionality.
• Identify and resolve technical issues during installation and commissioning.
• Maintain accurate technical documentation and provide technical input to Projects.
• Train Technicians and customers on equipment operation, programming and technical requirements.

PLC, HMI & SCADA

• Develop, maintain and/or understand PLC programmes for automated systems and natural gas equipment.
• Troubleshoot and commission PLC systems at the Motherstation and customer sites.
• Understand and support HMI, SCADA and industrial control systems.
• Work with designers and OEMs to ensure control systems meet performance and reliability requirements.
• Perform commissioning, start-up, testing and system verification.
• Continuously improve control systems to enhance safety, functionality and cost efficiency.
• Provide technical support and training on PLC, HMI and SCADA systems.

Health, Safety & Compliance

• Ensure compliance with company Health and Safety policies, procedures and applicable legislation.
• Ensure correct PPE, equipment and clothing are used.
• Maintain safe conditions for employees, customers, contractors and visitors.
• Assist SHEQ with safety files for new customer installations.
• Ensure accidents, incidents and near-misses are reported within required timeframes.
• Immediately report hazards and maintain a zero-tolerance approach to unsafe practices.
• Ensure statutory inspections, certifications and compliance requirements are maintained.
• Ensure all activities comply with legal and industry requirements.

Planning, Reporting & Administration

• Maintain comprehensive maintenance plans and programmes for all assets.
• Prepare monthly reports covering maintenance completed, outstanding work, asset condition and planned activities.
• Develop maintenance rosters and action plans with the General Manager – Operations.
• Keep systems, records, files, procedures and technical documentation current.
• Submit weekly and monthly reports within agreed deadlines.
• Monitor maintenance performance against KPIs and budgets.
• Provide technical input into operational planning and business improvement initiatives.

Leadership & People Management

• Lead and manage Technicians and Interns to ensure effective service delivery.
• Develop KPIs and conduct performance appraisals and quarterly reviews.
• Identify skills and training gaps and liaise with HR on required interventions.
• Develop training plans for Interns, Technicians and new employees.
• Provide regular technical training and maintain training records.
• Build technical competence within the maintenance team.
• Lead by example and promote a strong safety, service and performance culture.
• Promote collaboration across Operations, Distribution, Projects, Sales, Finance and SHEQ.

Budget & Cost Management

• Manage maintenance expenditure and overtime within approved budgets.
• Monitor costs of repairs, maintenance, spares and external technical services.
• Identify opportunities to improve maintenance efficiency and reduce operational costs.
• Manage critical spares to minimise downtime and unnecessary expenditure.
• Support cost-effective maintenance planning without compromising safety, compliance or reliability.

Industry & Business Support

• Keep up to date with South African and international CNG and natural gas industry developments.
• Monitor relevant technical, regulatory and operational developments.
• Provide the General Manager – Operations with feedback on industry and competitor developments.
• Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in maintenance, reliability, safety and operational efficiency.
• Support strategic operational and technical initiatives.
• Perform other reasonable duties within the scope of the role.

Skills & Knowledge

• Strong technical and operational understanding of natural gas equipment and infrastructure.
• Strong preventative and corrective maintenance knowledge.
• Knowledge of compressors, generators, PRMSs, regulators, boosters and dispensers.

Qualifications & Experience

• Matric.
• Millwright Trade qualification.
• Minimum 5 years’ relevant post-trade experience.
• Proven hands-on technical experience in maintenance and repair environments.
• Experience with pneumatics, hydraulics, instrumentation and electrical systems.
• Natural gas equipment and infrastructure experience advantageous.
• Experience with PLC troubleshooting and programming.
• Experience with compressors, PRMSs, regulators, dispensers, piping or related natural gas equipment advantageous.
• Experience in maintenance planning and critical spares management.
• Experience leading and managing technical teams.
• Experience working on customer sites and operational environments.
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Medically fit to work at heights.
• Willingness to work shifts, weekends and after hours when operationally required.
• Willingness to travel throughout South Africa for operational and project requirements.
• Must be available to provide 24/7 operational and emergency support when required.
