It is one of the largest pure-play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa based on aggregate coal reserves and marketable coal production. Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East and North African markets.
Job Description
Be part of our team and take statutory and operational responsibility by leading the mining function to optimize extraction, movement, and delivery of ROM coal to processing, to meet current and future targets in an effective, efficient, and safe way.
More of your responsibilities will include:
Monitoring operational performance to ensure adherence to plans, budgets and the overall business strategy while liaising with all teams in the operation to ensure understanding of the requirements
Ensuring compliance of all legal requirements, which include policies, procedures, standards and safety standards, as well as effective contractor management
Ensuring compliance and the integrated application of risk management and the availability to respond to serious Safety, Health, Environment and Social accidents and incident investigations in line with the DMRE requirements.
Implement and maintain sound people management and develop practices to ensure a productive workforce
Effective budget control and innovative plans to improve productivity and reduce costs as well as following correct processes in terms of evaluating and approving requirements
Effective asset optimisation and continuous improvement of the operation/ planning and SHE principles and capabilities
Continuous improvement in production, planning and safety as well as managing the underperforming sections while optimising the machinery and equipment
Assisting the GM with effective management such as the preparation of mining budgets and planning for the years business unit strategy
This role is a 3.1(a) appointment, which heads up the Mining Department at the Band 5 level and reports to the General Manager.
Qualifications
Degree/ B-Tech in Mining Engineering
Mine Manager Certificate of Competency Ticket
Safety course or equivalent
Advanced Management Programme or equivalent would be advantageous
Experience
Extensive experience in the opencast or underground coal mining industry
In-depth experience at section head level and managing people
Experience in assessing management principles around mining and related equipment and associated operational standards and philosophies
Prior experience at Mining Manager level will be advantageous
