Tabono Consult is a senior-led, boutique technical and strategic advisory firm in the mining sector that supplies specialist technical expertise, oversight and management to mining operations. We are hiring a Mine Surveyor to join Tabono Consult and take up a full-time, on-site role at a conventional underground chrome mine on the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Igneous Complex. You will be employed by Tabono Consult with the backing, professional oversight and career development that comes with being part of our technical team while serving as the legally appointed mine surveyor within the mine’s technical services function.
Your opportunity
As the Mine Surveyor on site, you will hold the statutory survey function for a busy chrome operation, a legal appointment under the Mine Health and Safety Act, 1996. You will be responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the mine’s spatial data: the statutory survey, monthly measurements and reconciliations, setting-out and survey plans that the operation depends on to mine safely, plan confidently and report correctly. It is a hands-on, underground-facing role with genuine ownership and the standing that comes with being the appointed surveyor on site.
This is a permanent, full-time position based at the mine (continuous on-site presence). You will report into Tabono Consult’s technical management for professional matters and work closely with the mine’s planning, geology and production teams day to day. Tabono Consult provides the professional-grade survey instrumentation you need to discharge the function.
Who you will work with
You will work alongside the mine’s technical services team including the mine geologist, rock engineer, strata control officer and mine planning functions, as well as the production and management teams on site. You will also have the support of Tabono Consult’s directors and wider technical network, who provide professional oversight, mentorship, replacement cover and management of your registration and continuing professional development. Where the operation includes a host-community survey assistant, you will help guide and develop them toward certification as part of the site team.
What you will do
- Hold and discharge the statutory mine survey function as the legally appointed mine surveyor under the MHSA
- Carry out the statutory survey and maintain accurate, up-to-date survey plans, records and registers
- Perform monthly measurements and reconciliations of development and stoping
- Set out development, directions and grades for underground and surface work
- Manage the mine’s spatial data and survey plans, ensuring their integrity and compliance
- Operate, calibrate and maintain the survey instrumentation and care for the equipment
- Integrate survey data with geology, rock engineering and mine planning to support safe, efficient mining
- Contribute to statutory and technical reporting, and uphold compliance with the MHSA and the mine’s standards and procedures
What you bring
We are looking for an experienced, meticulous surveyor who can carry the statutory appointment with confidence and communicate clearly with both technical and operational colleagues. You take pride in accurate spatial data, you are practical underground, and you work well in a hands-on operating environment. Specifically, we believe you have or are:
- Education: National Diploma, BTech or BSc in Mine Surveying or Surveying, or an equivalent qualification
- Registration and appointment: registered with PLATO / the South African Geomatics Council in a category that permits appointment as a mine surveyor, and holding or able to hold the mine surveyor’s certificate of competency required for legal appointment under the MHSA
- Experience: at least 5 years’ relevant post-qualification experience, sufficient to be legally appointable, ideally in underground hard-rock operations wherein chrome, PGM or comparable Bushveld experience is a strong advantage
- Technical skills: proficiency with modern survey instrumentation and survey / CAD software, with a solid grounding in statutory survey, reconciliations and setting-out
- Personal attributes: strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to explain technical matters clearly to engineers and non-engineers alike
- A valid driver’s licence and the ability to work full-time on site at the operation
It is an advantage if you have experience in a conventional mining environment and with the survey requirements of a statutory Code of Practice. Candidates’ resident in, or willing to relocate to, the Sekhukhune district or the wider Limpopo province is encouraged to apply.
