As part of our continued growth, we are looking for a Mid-Level Accountant who will be responsible for providing accounting and reporting support to the Finance Manager, ensuring accurate and timely management, statutory and underwriter reporting, robust balance sheet reconciliations, and IFRS 17-compliant financial reporting for the insurance business.
Key Objectives and Responsibilities:
General duties and responsibilities of a Mid-Level Accountant at Pineapple include, but are not limited to:
Management & Underwriter Reporting
- Prepare monthly management reports for the insurance function, and monthly/quarterly reports, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery
- Liaise with the underwriter to prepare cell captive tax computations, calculate fees due under binder holder and SLA agreements, and support the underwriter with data and reconciliations for statutory/regulatory reporting submissions (regulatory returns remain the underwriter’s responsibility)
Balance Sheet & Reinsurance Accounting
- Prepare and maintain balance sheet reconciliations within the insurance function, resolving reconciling items timeously
- Perform reinsurance calculations and reconciliations
AFS Preparation (IFRS 17)
- Assist with the preparation of the Annual Financial Statements, specifically IFRS 17 and insurance-related disclosures
- Liaise with the actuarial team on inputs feeding into IFRS 17 results
Payments Management
- Manage claims payments, premium refunds, and other insurance supplier payments
- Prepare cash-to-report reconciliations, clear differences with respective departments, and prepare float top-up requests
Audit, Budgeting & Financial Management Support
- Prepare audit packs and provide support to the external auditors during the annual financial audit
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting and cash flow reporting for the insurance function
- Provide broader accounting and reporting support to the Finance Manager as required
Required Education & Experience
- BCom degree with majors in Accounting and/or Finance
- Completed SAICA articles, SAIPA articles, or equivalent
- 3-5 years’ post-articles experience in a full accounting function,
- Strong working knowledge of IFRS 17 and its practical application within a short-term insurance business
- Essential: demonstrated experience in cell captive reporting and/or IFRS 17 reporting within short-term insurance (experience in both strongly preferred)
Preferred Education & Experience
- Postgraduate diploma in Accounting (CTA equivalent)
- Short-term insurance cell captive experience
- Strong knowledge of SA tax legislation as it applies to insurers
Technical Competencies
- Reinsurance accounting
- Balance sheet reconciliation and reporting
- Financial statement (AFS) preparation
- VAT and tax compliance within an insurance environment
- Binder holder and SLA agreement fee calculations
- Understanding of STI claims functions and reserves
- Digitally curious, with a proactive interest in using AI, LLM’s and automation to improve finance processes.
