Position: Medical Scientist (Immunology/Luminex – Wits VIDA)
Background:
The Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics (VIDA) Research Unit of the University of the Witwatersrand, formerly RMPRU, has conducted numerous studies over the past 20 years to assess the burden of and prevent vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD). Current projects include infant rotavirus and BCG trials.
Main
purpose
of the job:
Lead scientific portfolios and research focused on immunology laboratory-based projects.
Support academic training of students and staff, supervise students and research projects.
Location:
Nurses’ Residence, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital – Soweto, Johannesburg
Key performance areas:
Research design, implementation, and reporting:
Develop and write research and funding proposals, protocols, and SOPs for studies.
Explore new research avenues, develop research approaches and tools.
Manage collaborations, drive research agenda, and report progress to stakeholders.
Research implementation and management:
Coordinate projects, ensure protocols align with timelines and budgets.
Assist in designing and standardizing assays and research methods.
Research outputs & reporting:
Analyze immunological data, interpret results, and prepare scientific publications.
Present findings at conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Draft reports, guidelines, and reviews as required.
Student supervision:
Supervise/postgraduate student projects, review theses and manuscripts.
Participate in training and skill development for students.
Laboratory management:
Oversee laboratory performance, ensure SOP adherence, and maintain quality standards.
Implement corrective actions, maintain sterility, and participate in regular reviews.
Staff management:
Lead teams, foster development, and promote a positive work environment.
Manage staff performance, resource allocation, and labor relations.
Self-management and performance ownership:
Maintain high standards of professionalism, take ownership of tasks, and pursue career development.
Ensure timely completion of responsibilities and adapt to organizational policies.
Minimum
education
and training:
PhD in Biological or Medical Science or related field.
Work experience:
At least 5 years in an infectious disease research laboratory, with experience in microbiology, immunology, or clinical pathology.
Experience with Luminex technology.
Preferred additional qualifications:
Established research reputation, GCLP certification, organizational skills, and ability to work under pressure.
Self-motivated, independent, team player.
Job demands:
Work in high-pressure environments, manage administrative tasks, and supervise research projects.
Adhere to biosafety and health protocols, with potential exposure to infectious samples.
