Job Overview:
Mobile Support Solutions is seeking a skilled Mechanical Technician to join our team in Durban. This role involves the maintenance, repair, and servicing of our fleet of mobile clinics, mobile offices, and heavy-duty support vehicles. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and fabrication work to ensure all mobile units and support vehicles operate efficiently and safely.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Vehicle Maintenance & Repairs
Perform routine servicing and mechanical repairs on trucks, buses, and support vehicles.
Diagnose and repair engine, transmission, brake, steering, and suspension systems.
Troubleshoot and repair electrical faults, including wiring, lighting, and electronic controls.
Conduct thorough pre-trip inspections to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
2. Emergency Breakdown Support
Respond promptly to vehicle and equipment breakdowns within a 300km radius.
Perform on-site repairs or arrange for towing when necessary.
Provide roadside assistance for battery jump-starts, tire changes, and minor repairs.
3. Fabrication & Welding
Weld and fabricate brackets, mounts, and structural reinforcements for mobile units and support vehicles.
Modify and install custom storage solutions, workbenches, and internal fittings in mobile offices and clinics.
Repair and reinforce vehicle body structures as needed.
4. Electrical Repairs & Installations
Conduct minor electrical repairs such as replacing fuses, lights, wiring, and battery connections.
Assist in the installation and maintenance of solar power systems, generators, and inverters for mobile units.
Install and test GPS trackers, security locks, and electronic access systems.
5. Mobile Unit & Clinic Maintenance
Conduct regular inspections of mobile clinics and offices to ensure plumbing, ventilation, and power systems are fully functional.
Maintain and repair generators, air conditioning, and heating systems for mobile units.
Ensure that workstations, seating, and storage compartments in mobile offices remain in good working condition.
6. Security & Compliance
Conduct safety inspections to ensure roadworthiness and regulatory compliance.
Perform risk assessments before performing major repairs.
Ensure all vehicles and mobile units meet health and safety standards.
7. Inventory & Documentation
Maintain accurate records of repairs, servicing, and parts replaced.
Ensure adequate stock of essential spare parts, fluids, and consumables.
Provide detailed reports on completed work and escalate complex issues when necessary.
8. Team & Customer Support
Liaise with drivers, operators, and field staff to schedule maintenance and urgent repairs.
Train team members on basic troubleshooting and first-response measures for minor issues.
Assist management with additional maintenance, repairs, or special projects as required.
Requirements:
Qualifications: Technical certification in automotive, heavy-duty vehicle mechanics, or a related field.
Experience: Minimum 2-3 years in vehicle maintenance, preferably in the bus or truck industry.
Skills:
Strong mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic troubleshooting ability.
Proficiency in welding, fabrication, and diagnostics.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
Other:
Valid driver’s license (Code 10 or higher preferred).
Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and emergency call-outs.
Physically capable of lifting heavy components and working in various weather conditions.
