SUB’ROCA South Africa is looking for an experienced Mechanical Draughtsman to join our team and support the design and development of emergency refuge chambers and related mining systems.
We are looking for an autonomous mid-to-senior designer with approximately 5–8 year’s experience in mechanical, steel and sheet-metal design. You should be comfortable taking a design from concept through to detailed production drawings with minimal supervision.
We need someone who is rigorous, fast, reliable and technically strong, with a practical understanding of how designs are manufactured and fabricated.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and update detailed 2D engineering and production drawings.
- Develop accurate 3D CAD models and assemblies.
- Design welded steel assemblies and sheet-metal components.
- Translate engineering concepts into practical, manufacturable designs.
- Produce detailed fabrication and production drawings.
- Generate and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Review specifications and ensure designs comply with relevant standards and requirements.
- Work closely with engineering and production teams to resolve design and manufacturing issues.
- Support design improvements and product development.
- Maintain accurate drawing revisions and technical documentation.
- Coordinate with project stakeholders to ensure designs meet project requirements.
What We’re Looking For
- 5–8 year’s experience in mechanical, steel and/or sheet-metal design.
- Strong 3D and 2D CAD skills.
- Proven experience with welded assemblies and sheet-metal design.
- Strong detailing and production drawing capability.
- Experience with BOM generation and technical documentation.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of your work.
- Good understanding of manufacturing and fabrication processes.
- High attention to detail with a rigorous and practical approach.
- Fast, reliable and able to work to deadlines.
This is a hands-on design role for someone who can hit the ground running, work independently and deliver drawings that are ready for production.
