We are a Cape Town-based residential construction firm specialising in new builds, renovations, and alterations to domestic properties. We are seeking an experienced and self-driven Junior Quantity Surveyor to join our team, based at our offices in Fish Eagle Place, Kommetjie. This is a hands-on role requiring the successful candidate to engage directly with clients, prepare detailed Bills of Quantities, manage procurement, and oversee project cost control from inception to completion. You must have proven experience formulating full BOQs across all trades for residential new builds from hard copy plans.
Salary: (18k – 25k) based on experience
Key Responsibilities:
- Meet with prospective clients to discuss the scope of alteration, renovation, or new build projects.
- Conduct site visits to gather information and assess project requirements.
- Formulate a comprehensive Bill of Quantities (BOQ) across all trades for residential new builds from hard copy plans.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for alterations and additions to domestic properties.
- Produce accurate BOQs using Excel spreadsheets where QS software is unavailable.
- Procure all materials required for accepted projects, coordinating closely with the management team on on-site delivery schedules.
- Manage supplier relationships and obtain competitive pricing for materials.
- Work collaboratively with the Office Manager to process procurement payments.
- Monitor and manage project costs throughout the build lifecycle.
- Report regularly to the Director and Senior Project Manager on cost performance.
- Manage all variation orders and fulfil JBCC Minor Works contractual obligations.
Essential Requirements & Skills:
- 2+ years proven experience formulating full BOQs across all trades for residential new builds from hard copy plans.
- Practical estimating and pricing experience on domestic housing projects.
- Experience with alterations and additions to domestic properties.
- Strong procurement experience — sourcing, pricing, and coordinating materials.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for BOQ preparation.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Own reliable transport for site inspections and client meetings.
- Own computer with relevant software.
- Based in Cape Town and able to commute to Kommetjie daily.
Advantageous
• Experience with drawing or QS software (e.g. CCS, Candy, AutoCAD, or similar).
• Formal QS qualification (National Diploma, B.Tech, or BSc in Quantity Surveying).
• Familiarity with JBCC Minor Works contracts.
• Previous site experience in a supervisory or QS capacity.
