Full Job Description
Job Summary:
The Safety Officer is responsible for promoting a safe workplace environment by planning, implementing, and overseeing company safety programs. They ensure compliance with occupational health and safety (OHS) guidelines and standards, conduct inspections, and educate staff on safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries.
Key Responsibilities:
Compliance & Regulation
Ensure compliance with all applicable occupational health and safety regulations, company policies, and local, state, and federal laws.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of safety legislation and best practices.
Risk Assessment
Conduct risk assessments and site inspections to identify hazards.
Recommend and implement preventive and corrective measures.
Training & Education
Develop and deliver health and safety training programs for employees.
Conduct toolbox talks, safety drills, and onboarding sessions for new staff.
Incident Investigation
Investigate accidents, near misses, and incidents to determine root causes.
Prepare detailed reports and recommend improvements to prevent recurrence.
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain accurate records of safety-related activities, including incident logs, training records, and inspection reports.
Report safety performance metrics to management on a regular basis.
Emergency Preparedness
Assist in the development and implementation of emergency response plans.
Ensure that fire extinguishers, alarms, and first aid kits are properly maintained and accessible.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Ensure proper use and maintenance of PPE by all staff.
Monitor stock and availability of safety equipment and PPE.
Requirements:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
Must have a valid SACPCMP certificate or a certificate from an internationally recognized body.
Additional certifications such as NEBOSH, OSHA, IOSH, or First Aid are preferred.
Experience:
10–15 years of relevant experience in a safety or compliance role.
Skills:
Strong knowledge of health & safety regulations and practices.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Attention to detail and high level of organization.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and safety management software.
Working Conditions:
May be required to work in various environments including offices, construction sites, or industrial facilities.
Occasional travel may be required depending on site locations.
