We’re Hiring: Head of SHERQ

We’re looking for a seasoned SHERQ leader to take ultimate functional authority over Safety, Health, Environment, Risk and Quality across our entire Group – Operations & Maintenance, Engineering (USP&ENG), and Projects. Every SHERQ and safety appointee in the business reports to you functionally, and you’ll set the standards, the legal framework and the assurance regime that every plant, workshop and project site operates within.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Own and continually improve the Group SHERQ management system – policies, standards, procedures and the ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45001 audit programme
- Hold ultimate line accountability for every SHERQ and safety appointee across the Group, including appointment, competence, performance and succession cover
- Direct hazard identification, risk assessment and critical-control verification across all plants, workshops and project sites
- Set and enforce the Group incident reporting standard, and lead or oversee investigations into significant incidents to systemic root cause
- Maintain the legal register and ensure all statutory and legal appointments are current across every host-country jurisdiction
- Develop, control and report on the consolidated Group SHERQ budget, and quantify SHERQ-related financial exposure
- Act as the Group’s principal point of contact for SHERQ matters with clients, regulators, certification bodies and insurers
- Own the SHERQ training matrix and drive the culture and behaviour-based safety initiatives that shift ownership of safety to the workforce
What We’re Looking For
- 8-10+ years’ SHERQ experience in power generation, engineering or heavy-industrial operations, including at least 5 years leading a multi-site safety function
- A relevant qualification (National Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree or BTech in Safety, Risk, Environmental or Engineering Management) – waived for candidates with equivalent, substantial multi-site accountability
- NEBOSH International General Certificate/Diploma and/or SAMTRAC or an equivalent safety practitioner certification
- ISO 45001 / 14001 / 9001 Lead Auditor certification, with real experience running and closing audits
- Formal incident investigation certification (ICAM, TapRooT or equivalent root-cause methodology)
- Working command of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and equivalent legislation across African countries of operation
- Proven ability to lead across a matrix – holding operational and project leadership to account without direct line authority over them
- Advantageous: SACPCMP registration, occupational hygiene training, French language proficiency, and experience with digital SHERQ/CMMS platforms such as UpKeep

- Group LTIFR at or below target, with no fatalities and no high-potential incidents left uncontrolled
- Full statutory, regulatory and ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45001 compliance, with audit findings closed within agreed timeframes
- Every site and project served by a competent, properly appointed safety resource, with escalations resolved through the functional line
- A current, actively managed Group risk register and SHERQ budget delivered within approved targets
- Accurate, on-time monthly Group SHERQ reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, and strong client audit and prequalification outcomes

Location
USP&E Head Office in Johannesburg, with periodic travel to plant and project sites for audits, investigations and assurance visits
