Role Overview
The Head – Fresh is responsible for overseeing all operations within the fresh foods department, including but not limited to fruit and veg, bakery, deli and butchery. This role ensures that the department meets its sales and profitability targets, maintains high standards of quality and service, and complies with health and safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Management
Manage the day-to-day operations of the fresh foods department, ensuring smooth and efficient processes.
Monitor inventory levels and manage stock orders to ensure availability of fresh products while minimizing waste.
Coordinate with suppliers to source high-quality products at competitive prices.
Ensure compliance with food safety regulations, hygiene standards, and quality control procedures.
Oversee the merchandising of fresh food products, ensuring appealing and effective product displays.
Sales and Profitability
Develop and implement sales strategies to achieve and exceed departmental targets.
Monitor sales performance, analyze trends, and adjust strategies accordingly.
Manage pricing, promotions, and markdowns to maximize profitability while maintaining competitive pricing.
Work closely with the marketing team to promote fresh food products and seasonal offers.
Team Leadership and Development
Recruit, train, and manage a team of fresh food staff, including department heads for bakery, deli, butchery and fruit and veg.
Foster a positive work environment, promoting teamwork, employee engagement, and customer service excellence.
Conduct regular performance reviews and provide coaching and feedback to staff.
Develop and implement training programs to enhance product knowledge and customer service skills.
Customer Service
Ensure the highest level of customer service is provided by the fresh foods team.
Address customer inquiries, complaints, and feedback in a professional and timely manner.
Monitor customer satisfaction levels and implement improvements where necessary.
Compliance and Safety
Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations, including food safety and workplace safety.
Conduct regular audits and inspections to maintain high standards of hygiene and safety.
Implement corrective actions for any non-compliance issues identified.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement
Stay updated on industry trends, consumer preferences, and new product offerings.
Identify opportunities for innovation in product offerings, service delivery, and operational processes.
Lead initiatives to improve department efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance the customer experience.
Qualifications and Experience
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Retail Management, or a related field is preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of experience in a retail environment, with at least 3 years in a management role within the fresh foods department.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in retail management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
Knowledge:
Strong knowledge of food safety standards, retail merchandising, and supply chain management.
Working Conditions
Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and public holidays.
