Freelance Legal Transcribers and Translators (Sesotho ↔ English)
Location: Remote (Lesotho-based applicants preferred)
Engagement Type: Freelance / Independent Contractor
Duration: As and when assignments arise

About The Opportunity
We are building a pool of highly competent freelance Legal Transcribers and Translators to provide professional transcription and translation services.
Successful candidates will be engaged on a project-by-project basis depending on workload and client requirements.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Accurately transcribe audio and video recordings into professionally formatted written documents.
- Translate legal and general documents from Sesotho to English and English to Sesotho while preserving meaning, context, terminology, and tone.
- Proofread and edit transcripts and translations to ensure grammatical accuracy and consistency.
- Identify and appropriately research unfamiliar legal, technical or regulatory terminology.
- Maintain the highest standards of confidentiality and data protection.
- Deliver assignments within agreed deadlines.
- Produce documents that meet professional publishing and formatting standards.
- Work collaboratively with legal professionals and project coordinators where clarification is required.
- Comply with quality assurance procedures and revision requests where necessary.

Minimum Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
- A Diploma or Bachelor degree in one or more of the following:
- Legal Studies
- Languages
- Linguistics
- Translation Studies
- Or any other relevant qualification.
Experience
Applicants should have:
- At least 2 years’ experience in transcription and translation of legal proceedings or related work.
- Experience transcribing interviews, court proceedings, disciplinary hearings, arbitration proceedings, investigations or legal consultations will be an added advantage.
- Demonstrated experience translating between Sesotho and English.
- Experience working with confidential documents.
Knowledge Requirements
Applicants should have knowledge of:
- Legal terminology in English and Sesotho.
- Court and legal procedures (desirable).
- Report-writing standards.
- Professional document formatting.
- Confidentiality and ethical standards relating to legal documentation.
Technical Requirements
Applicants should have access to:
- A reliable computer or laptop.
- Stable internet connection.
- Microsoft Office (particularly Microsoft Word).
- Headphones or a quality audio device.
- Ability to receive and submit assignments electronically.
Essential Skills Assessment
Shortlisted candidates may be required to complete:
- A transcription assessment.
- A Sesotho–English translation test.
- An English–Sesotho translation test.
- A proofreading and editing exercise.
- A typing speed and accuracy assessment.
