We’re Hiring Our Next Key Field Position
Read the whole thing before you call.
I’m going to tell you the hard parts first, because if the hard parts run you off, we both just saved a lot of time.
Here’s what’s hard about it.
The work is heavy. You’ll drive posts, sling fence, swings concrete barriers, and be 50’ in the air installing steel trusses. Outdoors. In August and in February. Ten- and twelve-hour days. You will be sore.
You’ll travel. You’ll sleep in hotels. Sometimes you’ll find out on Friday that Monday looks different than we told you.
We are small. There are three of us. There is no HR department, no bench, nobody to cover for you. If you don’t show up, the job doesn’t happen, or someone else (like me) has to step up.
And we are young. My foreman is still learning. I am still building this. You will be asked to do things nobody in this company has ever done before, and you will have to help us figure them out.
If that sounds like a bad deal, stop reading. No hard feelings.
Here’s what’s rare about it.
Almost nobody gets to be the fourth person at a company right before it grows. You will not be a number on a big crew, handed a shovel and forgotten. Inside of a year you’ll be running jobs with the foreman. You’ll talk to the general contractor’s superintendent yourself. You’ll price your own ideas and watch them change what we make.
You’ll learn fence, structures, ironwork, rigging, equipment, project management, and how to look a client in the eye — because there aren’t enough of us for you to only do one thing.
The way this company works ten years from now is going to have your fingerprints on it.
If you want the military experience, without having to wear our country’s uniform and fighting foreign wars, this is the company you’ll enjoy. Because we are mission centered: We serve our clients with everything we have.
What I need from you.
Not experience. I’ll train the trade. If you work hard for me, I’ll work hard for you. I’ll pour all the experience I have into you without question. I’m more concerned with your character than anything else.
I need someone who works hard when nobody’s looking. Who takes correction without getting his feelings hurt. Who tells me the truth when he breaks something. Who treats a customer’s project like he owns it. Who, handed a problem he’s never seen before, makes a plan instead of standing there waiting to be told.
If you were an athlete in school, if you came out of the military looking for that same culture, or if you’ve just been the guy who outworks everybody at every job he’s ever had and nobody ever noticed — I want to talk to you.
What you get.
A base salary to start, with reviews at 90 days, six months, and a year — and raises tied to what you can actually do, not how long you’ve been here. Per diem when we travel. tools, and gear. A real path to foreman pay, and if a second crew happens, first shot at running it.
On top of that: when the company makes money, we share it. Nine Line pays a discretionary profit bonus based on what the whole company nets after all costs — not just what a job costs, but the overhead behind it. It isn’t part of your wage and it isn’t guaranteed. We set it after the books close, and we can change it or stop it. We do it because if you’re helping build this, you ought to feel it when it works.
Some of our jobs are public work and carry a prevailing wage rate set by law, which sometimes can pay out double the normal foreman rate. It is not guaranteed, but it is a benefit of working on state & public work projects.
Non-negotiables.
- Valid driver’s license and a record clean enough to drive our trucks and trailers. Willing to get a CDL.
- Able and willing to travel and stay overnight.
- Pass a drug screen.
- Show up. Every day. On time.
