Cabinet Maker NYC Inc. is seeking an experienced Wood Finisher Specialist for our custom architectural millwork and cabinetry shop in Brooklyn.

We specialize in high-end residential cabinetry and architectural millwork and are looking for a finisher who can independently handle custom color matching, staining, glazing, clear coats and high-end spray finishes from sample development through final production.

This is a skilled finishing position. Professional wood-finishing and spray-booth experience is required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare wood, veneer, MDF and other substrates for finishing
  • Develop and match custom stain and paint colors from designer/client samples
  • Mix stains, dyes, pigments, paints and coatings accurately
  • Produce finish samples for client/designer approval
  • Staining, toning, glazing and specialty finish applications
  • Spray primers, sealers, paints and clear coats
  • Apply polyurethane, acrylic and polyester finishing systems
  • Sand and prepare between finish coats
  • Achieve consistent color, sheen and finish quality across multiple components
  • Perform high-quality painted and clear finishes on cabinetry, doors, panels and custom millwork
  • Correct finish defects and troubleshoot coating/application problems
  • Maintain spray guns, pumps, pressure pots and finishing equipment
  • Maintain an organized, clean and safe finishing room and spray booth
  • Track approved color formulas and finishing procedures for repeatability
  • Inspect completed work for color consistency, surface quality and finish defects before release
  • Coordinate finishing schedules with production and project management
  • Properly store, label, handle and dispose of coatings, solvents and finishing chemicals

Required Experience

  • 5+ years of professional wood-finishing experience preferred
  • Experience finishing high-end cabinetry, furniture or architectural millwork
  • Strong custom color-matching and color-mixing ability
  • Professional spray-finishing experience
  • Strong knowledge of stains, dyes, toners and glazes
  • Experience with polyurethane and acrylic coating systems
  • Knowledge of polyester finishing systems
  • Experience producing matte, satin, high-gloss and specialty finishes
  • Strong understanding of wood species, veneer and how different substrates react to finishing systems
  • Ability to independently develop a finish from a reference sample
  • Ability to diagnose and correct finish defects such as orange peel, fisheyes, contamination, adhesion problems, color variation and improper sheen

Coating Systems

Experience with professional European wood-finishing systems is strongly preferred, including:

  • Sirca
  • ILVA
  • Polyurethane systems
  • Acrylic systems
  • Polyester systems
  • Stains, dyes, toners and glazes
  • High-build primers and clear coats

Experience with comparable professional finishing systems will also be considered.

Safety & Certifications

Candidate must have strong knowledge of safe handling and use of finishing chemicals and spray equipment.

NYC Certificate of Fitness experience/certification applicable to spray finishing, flammable/combustible materials, compressors or related shop operations is strongly preferred where required for the work performed.

  • Compressor and spray-equipment safety
  • Proper disposal of finishing materials and contaminated waste

Full-Time | Monday–Friday | On-Site in Brooklyn, NY
