One of Iowa’s largest contiguous farms, the Amana Farms is made up of 20,000 acres with award-winning crop fields, a 2,000 cow/calf herd, a 4,000 head cattle feedlot, an anaerobic digester, and Iowa’s largest privately held forest.
Job Summary
This feedlot production team member is an integral part of the cattle feedlot team. The team member will assist in the production of fed cattle and feeder cattle in a manner that will promotes efficient production of safe, wholesome beef while also promoting employee safety and allowing the Beef Department to achieve its operational goals.
This position communicates any operational challenges to the Feedlot Manager, and must be able to work both independently and collaboratively within a dynamic environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Feed cattle per schedule; maintain feeding equipment.
- Perform yard maintenance and manure management.
- Drive and operate tractors, trucks, and implements to feed cattle and to clean and bed pens.
- Operate and maintain all mobile and stationary feed processing and mixing equipment.
- Clean animal housing areas and bedding as needed, at a minimum at least once a week.
- Maintain facilities to ensure compliance with all federal and state agencies rules and regulations.
- Assist in ensuring the health of Amana Farms’ cattle by identifying illness and segregating sick cattle; treat cattle as prescribed by veterinarian or feedlot management.
- Process, sort, and vaccinate cattle with animal health products.
- Assist in maintaining and loading of anaerobic digester.
- Assist in proper record keeping for all levels.
- Collaborate with entities outside the Amana Farms staff as needed for specialized repairs and research into practices designed to improve productivity.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment throughout the operation.
Requirements
- Good communication skills.
- Private Pesticide Applicator Certification or willingness to obtain preferred.
- Experience handling cattle.
- Valid Iowa driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
- Ability to operate and maintain various types of equipment, including tractors and fork lifts.
- Willingness to assist in all areas of the operation.
- Positive attitude and the ability to follow the Core Values of Amana Farms.
Work Environment
· May work with a variety of machinery, hand tools and on and around equipment.
· This position involves lifting, bending, walking and standing for extended periods; tasks may involve crawling, stooping, kneeling, and twisting.
· This position is primarily outside and may work in adverse weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.
· Work is performed at the West Amana Feedlot; this position is not eligible for remote work.
· This is a full time position and may or may not be limited to 50 hours per week. Evening and weekend work will be required as job duties demand.
Hourly rate starts at $19 per hour.
