We are looking for an ESG Advisor to join one of the largest infrastructure investment managers, operating and investing across nearly 30 African countries.
Working at this level is not for the faint of heart; it’s for those who can thrive in a high-stakes, high-impact environment.
You’ll need 15+ years of relevant ESG experience and be responsible for managing ESG due diligence processes to align with global standards, including UNPRI, Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards, and more. Craft and implement ESG strategies for funds and portfolio companies. Monitor and optimize fund performance while ensuring compliance with ESG requirements. Review ESG aspects of diverse projects across the African continent.
Highly Advantageous:
Candidates with experience in early-stage climate investments and familiarity working alongside or within DFIs active in Africa are highly valued.
Education
Requirements
Postgraduate Degree (B.Sc./M.Sc. or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, preferably environmental or social sciences, power, energy, environmental engineering, or alternatively development studies/development finance
Appropriate professional registration or certification
Experience Requirements
15+ years of relevant experience
Experience in a line management ESG role at a company or fund
Experience in active mentoring and developing ESG capacity, particularly at early-stage portfolio companies, across Africa
Responsibilities
Strategic ESG Leadership: Provide thought leadership and develop actionable deliverables focused on sustainability in investment. Design and refine ESG strategies for fund managers and portfolio companies to align with best practices.
Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) System: Assess, drive, and enhance Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESMS) for fund managers and portfolio companies. Ensure fund compliance with global ESG standards, including UNPRI, Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards, IFC EHS Guidelines, and ILO standards.
ESG Due Diligence: Conduct in-depth ESG due diligence for investments to identify and mitigate risks while ensuring compliance with sustainability requirements. Evaluate ESG performance across diverse sectors and asset classes to deliver measurable positive impacts.
Portfolio Management and Monitoring: Review and manage ESG aspects of projects and investment portfolios. Support asset managers in monitoring ESG obligations, including site visits and engagement with portfolio company management teams.
Implementation and Compliance: Assist in project implementation and ensure ESG compliance within portfolio companies’ contractual obligations.
Reporting and Client Engagement: Prepare detailed investor and sustainability reports, responding to ESG-related shareholder queries. Analyze ESG data to derive actionable insights for clients and stakeholders.
Training and Development: Mentor and train investment teams and portfolio companies on ESG best practices, fostering a culture of sustainability.
