Electronics Assembly & Solder Technician

Position Summary

SMI is looking for an experienced, highly skilled Electronics Assembly & Solder Technician to join our production team.

This is not an entry-level soldering position. We are looking for technicians who are confident working on complex, high-reliability assemblies and who take pride in producing exceptional workmanship.

The ideal candidate has extensive hands-on soldering experience, a strong understanding of electronics assembly requirements, and current or previous J-STD-001 certification. Experience working in aerospace, defense, medical, or other high-reliability manufacturing environments is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high-quality hand soldering in accordance with IPC J-STD-001 requirements.
  • Assemble and solder complex electronic and electromechanical assemblies.
  • Perform through-hole soldering, wire soldering, terminal soldering, connector assembly, and other precision solder operations.
  • Perform component removal, rework, and repair when required.
  • Work comfortably under magnification and microscopes on detailed assemblies.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, work instructions, specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Inspect completed work for workmanship and compliance before moving product to the next operation.
  • Maintain proper ESD controls and material-handling practices.
  • Accurately complete travelers, inspection records, and other production documentation.
  • Work closely with Quality, Engineering, and Production leadership to resolve manufacturing issues.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work area.

Required Qualifications

  • IPC J-STD-001 certification or significant demonstrated experience working to J-STD-001 requirements.
  • Strong hand-soldering skills.
  • Experience working on high-reliability electronic assemblies.
  • Ability to consistently produce clean, repeatable workmanship.
  • Ability to solder and rework small and delicate components.
  • Strong understanding of solder joints, wetting, thermal control, cleanliness, and common solder defects.
  • Ability to read drawings, specifications, and detailed work instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently without constant supervision.
  • Commitment to quality and documentation requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional electronics soldering or electronics assembly experience.
  • Current J-STD-001 certification.
  • Experience with IPC/WHMA-A-620 requirements.
  • Experience with aerospace or defense manufacturing.
  • Experience building cable and wire harness assemblies.
  • Experience with high-density connectors, shield terminations, splicing, and precision wire preparation.
  • Experience working under a microscope.
  • Experience in an AS9100 manufacturing environment.
  • Experience working with customer-specific workmanship standards and controlled manufacturing documentation.

Pay: $19.00 – $21.00 per hour
