Role Overview:

Our client in the renewable energy sector is seeking an Economic Development Manager to support the delivery of a project-linked economic development programme. The successful candidate will report directly to Senior Management / Project Manager and will be based between the company’s office and project sites, with regular travel required.

The purpose of this role is to lead and manage economic development (ED) initiatives in line with contractual, regulatory, and social impact requirements. The role will focus on ensuring compliance with ED obligations while driving sustainable socio-economic benefits for local communities impacted by renewable energy projects.

This role is suited to a proactive, resilient, and stakeholder-focused professional who can operate effectively in a fast-paced, project-driven environment and navigate complex community dynamics with professionalism and integrity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and manage project-specific economic development strategies aligned with contractual and regulatory requirements
  • Monitor and report on ED commitments, ensuring compliance with REIPPPP principles, Social Impact Assessments (SIAs), and other applicable frameworks
  • Identify and drive opportunities for local enterprise development, job creation, skills development, and community upliftment
  • Oversee and coordinate ED consultants and ensure alignment with project objectives
  • Identify risks related to ED non-compliance and implement appropriate mitigation measures
  • Support project teams, contractors, and stakeholders in understanding and meeting ED obligations
  • Prepare and maintain accurate ED reports, audits, and supporting documentation
  • Engage with communities, stakeholders, and project partners, representing the company in forums and committees
  • Contribute to bid, negotiation, and project execution phases with ED-related inputs and strategies

Minimum Requirements

Education:

Degree in Economics, Development Studies, Social Sciences, Business Management, or a related field

Experience:

  • Minimum 3-8 years' experience in economic development, preferably within renewable energy, infrastructure, or construction sectors
  • Proven experience in community engagement and social impact programme implementation
  • Strong knowledge of South African economic development frameworks (including REIPPPP)

Technical & Professional Skills

  • Strong understanding of economic development compliance, reporting, and regulatory frameworks
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement, community facilitation, and programme implementation
  • Excellent report writing, analytical, and monitoring skills
  • Strong project management and organisational skills.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Analytical and reporting skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a project-driven environment.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and cultural sensitivity.

Working Conditions

·       Project-based role with travel to project sites

·       May require work outside normal office hours to accommodate community engagements

·       Role is fixed term and linked to the project lifecycle and does not create an expectation of permanent employment.
