Customs Manager (International Trade)
Purpose of the Role
To ensure that the organization operates within international trade laws and customs regulations while optimizing trade processes to reduce cost, mitigate risk, and enhance supply chain efficiency. This role is key to maintaining global compliance and leveraging international trade as a strategic business advantage.
Key Responsibilities
Ensure Customs & Regulatory Compliance: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of global customs regulations; ensure the company’s operations meet all legal requirements across jurisdictions.
Oversee Import/Export Operations: Manage documentation for international shipments, including classification, valuation, origin determination, and regulatory filings.
Manage Critical Customs Documentation: Prepare and verify the accuracy of invoices, packing lists, and certificates of origin to prevent costly delays and penalties.
Conduct Internal Audits: Implement audit procedures and compliance reviews to ensure customs processes meet internal and external standards.
Develop Trade Compliance Programs: Create internal policies, SOPs, and training materials to raise compliance awareness across teams involved in trade.
Identify Duty-Saving Opportunities: Strategically leverage Free Trade Agreements, duty drawback schemes, and cost-saving opportunities to improve the bottom line.
Mitigate Trade Risks: Evaluate risks related to customs delays, fines, or legal non-compliance and develop mitigation and contingency plans.
Stay Current with Global Trade Changes: Continuously monitor international regulatory changes and lead internal change management to ensure compliance and adaptability.
Minimum Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree in International Trade, Supply Chain, Business, or related field.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years in customs compliance or international trade logistics, including at least 2 years in a leadership or managerial role.
Certifications: Customs Broker License (preferred), Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) or equivalent advantageous
Technical Skills: Strong understanding of customs systems, tariff classifications, and Free Trade Agreements
Experience with trade compliance software and SAP or similar ERP systems
Soft Skills: Detail-oriented, analytical, strong communicator, and a natural problem-solver. Ability to work under pressure and manage cross-functional stakeholders
