Job Title: Contracts Director – Tunnel & Road Construction
Reports To: Chief Operating Officer / Managing Director

Job Purpose:

The Contracts Director will be responsible for overseeing the full contract lifecycle on large-scale tunnel and road construction projects, ensuring compliance with local and international engineering and construction standards. This role will lead commercial strategy, risk management, contract negotiation, and legal compliance across multiple infrastructure projects, with a strong focus on underground works and transport corridors.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and manage all contractual aspects of major tunnel and road infrastructure projects from inception through completion.
Negotiate, draft, and review a wide range of engineering and construction contracts including FIDIC, NEC, and bespoke forms.
Provide strategic direction for procurement and subcontractor agreements.
Ensure contract compliance with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), SACPCMP, and international equivalents under Washington, Sydney, and Dublin Accords or FEANI, ECCE, IPEA registrations.
Interface with government agencies, consultants, and stakeholders to ensure projects adhere to legal, environmental, and safety regulations.
Oversee cost control, change management, claims, and dispute resolution processes.
Mitigate risks and manage liability throughout the project lifecycle.
Manage a multidisciplinary commercial and legal team.
Prepare and present reports to senior leadership on contract performance and risk exposure.
Act as the lead on contract close-outs, extensions, and audits.

Minimum Qualifications and Registrations:

Mandatory Registration with one or more of the following:
Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) or Professional Technologist (Pr Tech Eng).
SACPCMP registration as a Construction Manager or Construction Project Manager.
Recognised international equivalent registration under:
Washington Accord
Sydney Accord
Dublin Accord
EU Federations (e.g., FEANI, ECCE)
International Professional Engineers Agreement (IPEA)
US State Licensing Boards (for professionals with verifiable tunnel construction experience registered prior to Washington Accord inclusion).

Experience Requirements:

Minimum 15 years experience in large-scale infrastructure projects, including:
At least 5–10 years in senior leadership or director-level roles.
Proven expertise in tunnel construction (TBM, NATM, cut-and-cover) and roadworks (highways, interchanges, bridges).
Experience with design-build, EPC, and PPP contract models.
International project experience is a strong advantage.

Key Skills and Competencies:

Deep knowledge of contract law and construction legislation.
Expert negotiation and dispute resolution skills.
Strong understanding of civil and geotechnical engineering principles.
Familiarity with contract administration tools and ERP systems.
Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management.
Strategic thinker with the ability to operate under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Law, or Contract Management.
Certification in PMP, MRICS, or equivalent.
Previous work on tunneling projects involving complex geological and urban conditions.
