The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) seeks a Chief Researcher:
Synthetic Biology Innovation to lead and drive strategic technical efforts in synthetic biology research. This leadership position will be integral in accelerating the development of a bio-foundry to deliver high-value products, supporting national goals to localize production in health and industrial sectors.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and support the development of strategies for synthetic biology research across health and industrial applications.
Design and implement the CSIR National Research Foundation Innovation Chair in Synthetic Biology to create global impact.
Build and oversee the establishment of a synthetic biology innovation and bio-foundry lab.
Lead multidisciplinary teams through Design–Build–Test–Learn (DBTL) cycles for product and process development.
Deliver on technical milestones required for synthetic biology product design, optimization, and commercialization.
Mentor and supervise senior researchers, postdoctoral fellows, doctoral and master’s students, building human capital through industry and academic collaborations.
Attract and retain top talent, fostering an inclusive and diverse team environment.
Secure Funding for research and development programs through multiple revenue streams.
Lead national and international collaborative research networks with universities and industry.
Disseminate research through publications, conference presentations, and public outreach.
Drive commercialization efforts through patenting, licensing, and industry partnerships.
Contribute to national strategy discussions on synthetic biology.
Qualifications, Skills, and
Experience:
Doctoral degree in biomedical sciences, biochemistry, synthetic biology, molecular biology, or a related field with 15+ years of experience in R&D.
10+ years in a managerial capacity, including project and program management.
Expertise in synthetic biology, microbiology, molecular biology, bio-foundry, and biotechnology.
Strong international research and innovation track record with an H-index of 25+.
Proven ability to attract and supervise postgraduate students and postdocs.
Demonstrated success in industry collaboration, IP generation, and commercialization.
Experience securing Funding from diverse sources to support research programs.
Expertise in managing complex projects and delivering results on time and within budget.
Leadership experience at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level.
Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential for this role.
