Chemical Plant Operator Jobs in Missoula, MT at Pelican Chemicals, Inc.

Pelican Chemicals, Inc. is a Montana-based specialty chemical manufacturer serving aviation, municipal and industrial customers across the United States. Founded in 1993, Pelican produces runway and pavement deicers, water-treatment chemicals and industrial process products.

We are hiring a dependable, safety-focused Chemical Plant Operator for our Missoula plant. This is a hands-on role combining chemical batch production, steam-boiler operations, quality testing, liquid transfers, forklift operation, shipping and receiving, inventory work, plant housekeeping and authorized light maintenance.

The position reports to Missoula’s Operations Manager. The operator must be comfortable working independently on assigned tasks while communicating operating problems, safety concerns, off-specification results and maintenance needs promptly.

What you will do

  • Operate and monitor chemical production processes used to manufacture deicers, water-treatment chemicals and other industrial products.
  • Follow current Standard Operating Procedures, batch records, Safety Data Sheets, labels and work instructions to complete production safely and consistently.
  • After appropriate training and authorization, operate and monitor the plant’s large steam boiler and related equipment; complete assigned checks and operating logs and immediately escalate abnormal pressure, temperature, water-level, combustion or equipment conditions.
  • Measure, stage and add raw materials; perform approved liquid transfers using pumps, hoses and valves.
  • Collect samples, perform assigned quality-control tests and document results; hold and escalate product that does not meet specification.
  • Complete batch records, production logs, boiler records, lot records, inventory transactions and shipping documentation accurately and on time.
  • Load and unload van trailers, palletized freight and bulk liquid tankers using authorized equipment and procedures.
  • Operate forklifts and safely move supersacks, totes, drums, pallets and other materials.
  • Inspect incoming materials, containers, trailers and tankers for identity, condition, documentation and safe unloading.
  • Maintain accurate and orderly raw-material, packaging and finished-product inventory.
  • Maintain clean, safe and organized production, boiler and warehouse areas, including spill readiness, clear walkways and proper labeling.
  • Perform authorized light plumbing, electrical, mechanical and general facility maintenance within training and applicable energy-control procedures.
  • Meet daily production and shipment priorities without compromising safety, quality or documentation requirements.
  • Travel periodically to support other Pelican facilities, production activities or company projects, including possible multi-day assignments.

What we require

  • At least two years of prior forklift operating experience.
  • Prior warehouse, production, material-handling or comparable industrial work experience.
  • Ability to safely lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to read and accurately follow written SOPs, labels, Safety Data Sheets, batch instructions and equipment procedures.
  • Ability to complete detailed production, quality, inventory, boiler and shipping records accurately.
  • Strong reliability, practical problem-solving ability and willingness to learn unfamiliar products and equipment.
  • Ability to work the full-time Monday-Friday day schedule and participate in required travel.
  • Successful completion of Pelican’s applicable site-specific safety training and equipment evaluations before independent operation.

Experience that is especially valuable

  • Hands-on experience operating, monitoring or maintaining an industrial steam boiler or steam-generation system.
  • A current boiler operator certification, license or recognized industrial boiler credential. Please identify the credential and issuing jurisdiction or organization when applying.
  • Chemical manufacturing or chemical-handling experience.
  • Experience working under OSHA-regulated safety programs, including hazard communication, PPE and lockout/tagout or other energy-control practices.
  • Warehouse inventory, shipping/receiving and bills-of-lading experience.
  • Experience loading or unloading bulk tankers, van trailers, supersacks, totes or drums.
  • Mechanical experience such as welding, plumbing, pump and valve work, general construction or light electrical maintenance.
