The CDL B Operator – Railroad Track Cleaner is responsible for operating commercial motor vehicles and railroad maintenance equipment used in the cleaning, maintenance, and preparation of railroad tracks and right-of-way areas. This position performs a combination of equipment operation, manual labor, material handling, and general railroad maintenance duties while following all company, railroad, and safety requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate CDL Class B vehicles and other assigned equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Operate track-cleaning equipment, dump trucks, loaders, skid steers, excavators, or other heavy equipment as assigned and qualified.
  • Clean railroad tracks, ballast, crossings, switches, and surrounding right-of-way areas.
  • Remove dirt, debris, vegetation, mud, ballast, and other materials from railroad track areas.
  • Load, transport, and unload materials and debris using trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Assist with general railroad track maintenance and construction activities as directed.
  • Perform manual labor, including shoveling, lifting, raking, sweeping, digging, and material handling.
  • Assist equipment operators and railroad crews with daily work activities.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate vehicle and equipment inspection records and required documentation.
  • Follow all railroad operating procedures, roadway worker protection requirements, and company safety policies.
  • Maintain required communication with supervisors, railroad personnel, and other crew members.
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions, equipment defects, or potential hazards.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and cleaning as assigned.
  • Work safely around active railroad tracks, moving equipment, trains, and other job-site hazards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Foreman, Superintendent, or Project Manager.

Qualifications

  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B required.
  • Clean and acceptable driving record.
  • Previous experience operating commercial vehicles, heavy equipment, or construction equipment preferred.
  • Railroad, track maintenance, or construction experience preferred but not required.
  • Ability to safely operate equipment in a railroad work environment.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a crew.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be willing to travel and work varying schedules, including nights, weekends, and extended hours as required by project needs.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, bending, climbing, standing, and walking for extended periods.

Safety Requirements

  • Must comply with all company, OSHA, FRA, railroad, and project-specific safety requirements applicable to the position.
  • Must complete required company and railroad safety training before performing assigned work.
  • Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Must maintain situational awareness and follow all railroad track and roadway worker protection procedures.
  • Must immediately report accidents, injuries, near misses, equipment damage, and unsafe conditions.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to safely perform physical work in an outdoor railroad environment. Duties may require frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, and working around heavy equipment. The employee may be required to lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds or as required by the job.

Work Environment

Work is primarily performed outdoors on or around active railroad tracks and construction/maintenance work sites. Employees may be exposed to extreme temperatures, dust, dirt, noise, vibration, moving trains, heavy equipment, uneven terrain, and other railroad work-site hazards.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.00 – $28.00 per hour
