KEY PURPOSE OF JOB
The Business Intelligence (BI) Developer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining data-driven solutions that support strategic and operational decision-making across the organization. This role transforms raw data into meaningful insights through dashboards, reports, and analytics tools, enabling stakeholders to make informed, data-backed decisions. The BI Developer works closely with business users, analysts, and IT teams to understand reporting needs, ensure data accuracy, and continuously enhance the organization’s data intelligence capabilities.
KEY TASKS
General:
Data Modelling and Integration
Design, build, and optimize data models (within ZAP) to support reporting and analytics needs.
Integrate data from various sources (databases, APIs, flat files) into data warehouses or data marts.
Report and Dashboard Development
Create and maintain interactive dashboards, reports, and visualizations using ZAP.
Ensure reports are accurate, timely, and aligned with business requirements.
Requirements Gathering
Work closely with stakeholders to understand business needs, KPIs, and reporting requirements.
Translate business questions into actionable data solutions.
Data Quality and Governance
Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of data used for reporting and analytics.
Collaborate with data governance teams to enforce data standards and best practices.
Performance Tuning and Optimization
Monitor and optimize the performance of BI solutions, queries, and data models.
Troubleshoot data and performance issues.
Collaboration and Support
Work with data engineers, and business teams to support ongoing and ad hoc reporting needs.
Provide training and support to users on BI tools and data interpretation.
Documentation and Standards
Maintain clear documentation of BI solutions, data definitions, and processes.
Adhere to development standards and contribute to improving internal BI practices.
Automation and Innovation
Identify opportunities to automate recurring reporting tasks and streamline data delivery.
Stay current with industry trends and emerging BI technologies to recommend improvements.
Security and Compliance
Ensure data and BI solutions comply with internal security policies and regulatory requirements (e.g. NIST, POPIA, ISO27001).
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Qualification:
Bachelor’s degree or similar (Analytics/Data Courses & Certifications)
Experience & Knowledge:
1-4 years of work experience in the business intelligence environment (Data Engineering/Data Analytics/Data Science). Building/maintaining dashboards, pipelines and data models
High Proficiency with SQL and PL-SQL. (Stored Procedures, Triggers, Views etc.)
ZAP/PowerBI (or similar analytics tool) experience is essential
Experience with Python & APIs is a plus
Experience working for a technology or manufacturing company is preferred
Syspro experience will be an advantage
COMPETENCIES & SKILLS
Strong understanding of Datawarehouse/ Datamart architecture and ETL principals
Analytical and problem-solving skills
Curious nature with the capability of extracting insight from datsasets
Strong stakeholder management/engagement skills
Strong self-management and independent thinker. Desire to learn/grow and eventually take ownership of BI programme
