Position Overview:
As an Actuarial and Data Analyst at Pineapple Tech PTY LTD, enables Pineapple’s data-driven strategy by transforming raw data into actionable insights, automating processes, and optimising decision-making. The role provides analytical support to the actuarial function across the core short-term insurance disciplines, such as pricing, renewals, retentions, and loss ratio analysis, reserving, and capital requirements. It is also responsible for structuring reliable data views and dashboards that inform business performance and enable the training and monitoring of models across pricing, retentions, and renewals. By bridging actuarial, technical, and business teams, this role enhances operational efficiency, innovation, and compliance, directly contributing to Pineapple’s strategic goals of digital transformation, scalability, customer intelligence, and continuous improvement across business operations.
KEY OBJECTIVES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
General Responsibilities, Duties, and Undertakings of an Actuarial and Data Analyst at Pineapple Tech (Pty) Limited:
Actuarial and Insurance Analytics Support:
- Provide analytical support to the actuarial function across pricing, renewals, retentions, and loss ratio analysis, with secondary support on reserving and capital requirement workstreams.
- Build and maintain the datasets that underpin actuarial deliverables, models, and claims-reserving triangles.
- Reconcile internal data against insurer and partner reporting (e.g. OMART) to ensure consistent claim identifiers, financial period alignment, and a trusted single source of truth.
- Produce required reporting for business units and stakeholders.
- Implement and test rating structures and pricing models delivered by external modelling partners (e.g. Insure.AI) within Pineapple’s production environment, validating outputs against internal data and business expectations before deployment.
- Monitor deployed pricing models and rating factors on an ongoing basis (loss ratio, conversion, and retention impact by segment), flagging when models require review or recalibration.
- Translate monitoring outputs into strategic recommendations for pricing, discounting, and portfolio decisions, in collaboration with senior actuarial and pricing stakeholders.
Data Analysis and Reporting:
- Conduct detailed data analysis to support departmental and company-wide decision-making.
- Build and maintain recurring reports that provide meaningful business insights.
- Collaborate with business users to define data needs and ensure timely, accurate delivery.
- Structure and maintain model-ready data views that support the training and monitoring of models.
Dashboard Creation and Management:
- Design, develop, and manage interactive dashboards covering loss ratios, retention and renewal outcomes, pricing performance, and portfolio KPIs, using BI or visualisation tools.
- Ensure dashboards are accurate, automated, and tailored for various business units.
- Train end-users to interpret and leverage dashboards for performance tracking.
Process Problem-Solving and Automation:
- Identify inefficiencies and implement low-code or automated solutions to streamline operations.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to design scalable workflows and reduce manual dependencies.
- Continuously refine processes based on user feedback and performance metrics.
Cross-Departmental Collaboration and Communication:
- Act as a liaison between technical and business units, ensuring clarity in data requirements.
- Support project teams with data insights and solution design input.
- Facilitate workshops to promote data literacy and collaboration.
Innovation and Continuous Learning:
- Explore emerging trends in analytics, low-code tools, and automation technologies.
- Share best practices and contribute to Pineapple’s innovation culture.
- Participate in training and mentorship initiatives to advance analytical capabilities.
Required Education and Experience:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors Degree in Actuarial Science.
- 0 – 3 years of experience, preferably within the financial services, insurance, or tech-startup environment.
Preferred
- NQF Level equivalent of the above (Qualification in Data Analytics, Engineering, or Data Science advantageous).
- Progress towards the actuarial professional exams (Passed a minimum of 6 exams through the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA)), is advantageous.
- Experience working in the Banking or Insurance sectors with exposure to short-term insurance concepts (pricing, loss ratios, renewals, retentions, reserving), BI tools, and process automation.

- Strategic Pricing Decisioning Support (using monitoring outputs and portfolio analysis to inform rate, discount, and segment strategy decisions).
