Chief Financial Officer (CFO) – Telecommunications
Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced and commercially driven Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead the financial strategy and performance of a dynamic telecommunications business.
The CFO will be responsible for the overall financial management of the organisation, providing strategic financial leadership while ensuring strong governance, financial controls, regulatory compliance and sustainable growth.
The successful candidate will operate as a key member of the executive leadership team, partnering with the CEO and other executives to drive business performance, optimise profitability, manage risk and support the company’s long-term growth strategy.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Strategy & Leadership
- Develop and execute the company’s overall financial strategy in alignment with business objectives.
- Provide strategic financial insight and commercial guidance to the CEO and Board.
- Lead the annual budgeting, forecasting and long-term financial planning processes.
- Develop financial models and business cases to support strategic investments and growth initiatives.
- Monitor financial performance against budgets, forecasts and strategic targets.
- Identify opportunities to improve profitability, cash generation and shareholder value.
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all financial accounting, management reporting and financial planning functions.
- Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting.
- Maintain robust financial controls, policies and processes across the organisation.
- Ensure compliance with IFRS and applicable South African legislation and regulations.
- Lead the year-end audit process and relationship with external auditors.
- Provide the Board and executive leadership team with meaningful financial analysis and performance insights.
Commercial Finance
- Partner with commercial, sales, technology and operations leadership to drive business performance.
- Analyse revenue streams, customer profitability, pricing and margins.
- Provide financial input into product development, pricing strategies and commercial agreements.
- Evaluate capital expenditure, infrastructure investments and strategic projects.
- Assess the financial viability and return on investment of new products, services and market opportunities.
- Drive cost optimisation and operational efficiency initiatives.
Telecommunications / Industry Finance
- Oversee financial planning for network infrastructure, technology investments and capital-intensive projects.
- Develop appropriate financial models for network expansion, infrastructure investment and technology modernisation.
- Manage the financial implications of customer acquisition, churn, ARPU and subscriber growth.
- Provide financial oversight of wholesale, enterprise, consumer and/or connectivity revenue streams.
- Understand the financial impact of regulatory changes, spectrum, infrastructure and telecommunications licensing requirements.
- Support strategic decisions relating to network sharing, infrastructure partnerships, acquisitions and other industry opportunities.
Treasury, Cash Flow & Funding
- Oversee cash-flow management and working capital optimisation.
- Develop and maintain appropriate liquidity and funding strategies.
- Manage relationships with banks, lenders, investors and other financial institutions.
- Oversee debt facilities, financing arrangements and covenant compliance.
- Optimise the company’s capital structure and funding requirements.
- Ensure appropriate controls over accounts receivable, collections and credit management.
Governance, Risk & Compliance
- Establish and maintain strong financial governance frameworks.
- Identify, assess and mitigate financial and commercial risks.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, tax requirements and industry regulations.
- Oversee internal controls and risk management processes.
- Support the Board and Audit & Risk Committee with accurate financial and risk reporting.
- Ensure appropriate financial policies and delegations of authority are implemented across the business.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor and develop the finance function.
- Build a high-performing, commercially focused finance team.
- Establish clear performance objectives and accountability across the finance function.
- Drive automation, digitalisation and process improvement within finance.
- Develop succession plans and ensure the continued development of finance talent.

The CFO will work closely with:

Minimum Requirements
- CA(SA) or equivalent recognised professional accounting qualification.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or a related discipline.
- 10+ years’ experience in senior financial leadership roles, preferably within telecommunications, technology, ICT, infrastructure or another complex, capital-intensive environment.
- Proven experience operating at CFO, FD, Finance Executive or equivalent senior level.
- Strong experience in financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting and commercial finance.
- Extensive knowledge of IFRS, financial governance and internal controls.
- Strong treasury, cash-flow and working-capital management experience.
- Experience managing large finance teams and working as part of an executive leadership team.
- Proven experience engaging with Boards, shareholders, investors and senior external stakeholders.
