We are seeking a dedicated and experienced 2nd Shift Transportation Lead to oversee and coordinate transportation operations during evening hours. This leadership role is essential in ensuring efficient road transportation activities, maintaining compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, and supporting our logistics and supply chain objectives. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, technical proficiency with transportation management systems, and excellent communication abilities to lead a dynamic team and manage freight movement effectively.
Key responsibilities include supervising dispatch operations, utilizing vehicle dispatch software, managing freight schedules, and ensuring timely delivery while adhering to safety and regulatory standards. Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate transportation activities on the second shift, ensuring seamless dispatching of freight and vehicle allocation.
- Utilize transportation management systems such as Oracle Transportation Management and Vehicle Dispatch Software to plan routes, monitor shipments, and optimize fleet utilization.
- Manage internal communication channels, including phone calls and digital messaging, to facilitate real-time updates with drivers, carriers, and customers.
- Oversee compliance with DOT regulations, safety standards, and company policies related to road transportation operations.
- Perform data entry related to shipping & receiving records, freight documentation, and vehicle logs with accuracy using tools like AS400 and Microsoft Office.
- Maintain organized records of shipments, freight details, vehicle maintenance schedules, and driver logs for audit readiness.
- Handle customer inquiries via phone call management with professionalism, demonstrating excellent phone etiquette.
- Collaborate with logistics partners such as 3PL providers to coordinate freight movement efficiently.
- Support analysis of transportation data to identify opportunities for process improvements and cost savings.
- Ensure effective fleet management by monitoring vehicle dispatch schedules, maintenance needs, and driver availability.
Experience
- Proven experience in transportation planning or road transportation operations within a logistics or supply chain environment.
- Familiarity with transportation management systems such as Oracle Transportation Management or similar platforms.
- Strong knowledge of DOT regulations governing commercial vehicle operations.
- Experience working with freight shipping & receiving processes, fleet management software, and vehicle dispatch tools.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities efficiently while maintaining attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational skills complemented by strong communication skills—both verbal and written.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel for data analysis and reporting.
- Prior experience in dispatching roles involving analysis skills for route optimization is preferred.
- Ability to adapt quickly in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of customer service.
